Gentlemen, Attached you can hopefully find the Lynchburg City Directory info. that Dad and I researched on the Jeptha and Sallie Goff family. The info was fairly easy to decipher, but placing it into chart format proved to be a challenge. When I moved an item in one column, it didn't move the corresponding items in adjoining columns, so I frequently had Sallie making cigars and one of the Edwards working in a cotton mill, instead of driving a streetcar! You'll better understand when you open and print the chart. Al and Doug, I know this is more information than you probably need on our line of Goffs, but I know you'll use your good judgement as to where to "file" it! I hope you both will find the use of the Lynchburg City Directories interesting - we found them to be an excellent source of yearly information to supplement what one can learn from the census charts. Sure helped me to better understand what and where the family may have been up to during those years between census data.
Ray, you will also note that Annie shows up frequently in the chart, yet she never appears with an occupation. Given Sallie's obituary note about her being "in
ill health for a long time, " I would suspect that Annie served as her Mom's caregiver, possibly qualifying her for a spot in the City Directory as working, just not in public work. Two other thoughts: Edward W.(ashington) was Jeptha's son from his first marriage, and isn't it interesting that Edward C. worked as a motorman for the Lynchburg Electric Motor Railway system. In one of the museums/archives in Lynchburg, I remember reading through a book about Lynchburg's trolley system. Some of the cars were quite elaborate, yet were eventually sold for scrap as was the fate of most trolley systems throughout the country, I suspect. We may need to locate that book to see if Edward C. might be listed as an employee. Interesting.
Well, the next challenge will be to decipher and load into chart form the marriage license information we compiled on the family. Don't hold me to a timeline! Hope all are well, Dave.
Lynchburg, VA City Directory Search for Jeptha & Sallie Goff Family Members,
Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA
The first Lynchburg City Directory that Jones Memorial Library has is the 1876 edition. Not every edition was researched due to time constraints. City directories listed only heads of households and workers residing therein, not all persons living in a particular household. Research compiled by John and Dave Goff, 10/24/2002.
