This family probably originated in England.

There are two branches that still need to be connected:

  • Descendants of John Goff b. 1776 Cape May Co., NJ through sons Amos Goff b. 1802 KY and Mason Goff b. 1798 PA, are part of this group. “Amos Gough” made his first known appearance in the historical record when he married Rosy Smith in Henry Co., KY in 1820. By the time of the 1850 census, Amos Goff was living in Marion Co., IN with his second wife. In the 1860 census, Amos Goff was living in Clinton Co., IN with his third wife.
  • John Griffin Goff made his first confirmed appearance in the 1900 Mercer Co., WV census as J. G. Goff, born April 1877 VA, with both of his parents being born in VA. According to his 1900 marriage record in Mercer Co., WV, he was born in Bedford Co., VA to Joseph and Ellen Goff. No family matching this description has been identified in the 1880 census or any other records prior to 1900.

Online trees claim this Cape May Co., NJ Goff family and another Cape May Co., NJ Goff family descend from John Goffe b. 1666 MA d. 1706 NJ in their paternal lineage. This is not possible as the YDNA haplogroups are different.

Identifying and doing YDNA37 on untested Goff lineages out of Cape May Co., NJ will help sort out the two genetically distinct Goff families.
