Nancy Criswell said her great-grandfather, James C. GOFF killed a man in Tennessee. The man wanted him to vote a certain way, James said no, went home got his gun and came back and killed the man. He fled to Arkansas for about 5 years and then moved back. She said one of the children was born in Arkansas. There were already 2-3 born at the time.

James married Emily Frances Creasy on 6 Feb 1872 in Decatur, Tennessee, USA. Emily was born on 10 Jun 1853 in Decatur, Tennessee, USA; died on 15 Dec 1929 in Lexington, Henderson, Tennessee, USA; was buried in Decatur County, Tennessee, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Ms Dyer a retired school teacher in Scotts Hill, supplied Ed Goff with this information:

"Jim Henry Goff was said to be an adopted son who was reared by the Goff family. His real name was Jim Henry Barlow. ( from the memory of Carrie Goff from information from her mother-in-law, Louisa Goff)"

This is the earliest source we have found for the Barlow story and is about as direct as we will find.

She also enclosed material from the family Bible of Lewis Franklin Goff that has some birth, death and marriage dates. I don't believe there is anything unusual but I have not studied it yet. (Bible in possession of Robert Goff)

Two lists of children for James Henry Goff were included and neither matches the list in Turner's Book.

CHILDREN: According to information furnished by Jonnie Martin, son of Rena Goff and John G. Martin
(this list looks good to me. 1850 is the Ballard Co., KY census and 1860 is the one w/Henry's widow in Hardin Co., TN)
    1. Hailey Goff--married Sloan [not a big stretch to Emily b. ca 1835 KY, M.E. Pierce]
    2. Kathy "Catty" Goff--never married [Catherine b. ca 1838 in 1860 census]
    3. Azalee Goff--married Leonard Creasy (Phil thinks this is A/Isabell 1850/1850 census)
    4. Lewis Franklin Goff--married Louisa Ross [b. 1853, in 1860 census]
    5. Jin Goff--married Francis Creasy [Jim C., 1850 & 1860 census]
    6. Rena Goff--married John G. Martin [this would be Arena b. 1840 in 1850/1860 census]

Below a slightly different version by Mary "Molly" Goff who married Leonard Austin, and who was the daughter of Lewis Franklin Goff.
    1. Azalee Goff--married Leonard Creasy
    2. Louis Franklin Goff--married Louisa Ross
    3. Martha Goff--married
    4. Hattie Goff--never married
    5. Rena Goff-- married John G. Martin
    6. Janie Goff--married Sloan

. (everyone else b. in KY) (note that sometimes Margarett's age is given as 77 - I think it's been misread and is 17, all of the 1's have a line at the top that can be mistaken as a 7, and it falls between 18 & 16 which means 17)

Henry married Sarah "Sally" Long. Sarah was born between 1814 and 1816 in Tennessee, USA; died between 1860 and 1870 in Hardin, Tennessee, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Sarah "Sally" Long was born between 1814 and 1816 in Tennessee, USA; died between 1860 and 1870 in Hardin, Tennessee, USA.

    Notes:

Possible sister of Jane LONG, wife of Edmund GOFF. Father is possibly Robert LONG Sr. of 1830 Henderson Co., TN. DNA shows that descendants of Edmond & Jane "Jenny" LONG GOFF and those of his brother Henry and Sarah "Sally" LONG GOFF are closer in DNA than to brother Louis so the LONGs are probably sisters. Dorothy GOFF ADAMS says she heard they were sisters.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  FatherB was born in 1765; and died.

    Notes:

NONE of these have been proven to be siblings. However, they are all of the same age, same surname, born in NC, lived near each other and used the same first names (Rhodica, Matilda, Lewis, Edmund for their children. Edmond, Henry & Louis do show a DNA link to BARLOW). However, a 2017 autosomal DNA study showed them to have the same MRCA (most recent common ancestor) number so they are probably siblings.

Matilda GOFF CARPENTER lived near Edmund GAWF in Henderson Co., TN.

1880 the son & grandson of Edmund GAWF, George W. & John Lavender GAWF are in 1880 Sharp Co., AR (p. 111B), as is Matilda (111A). George migrated ca. 1850 (census & birth of William Green GAWF) to 1853 (birth of James Perkins GAWF) and the closest I could come on Matilda is the birth of her granddau. Mary Jane DAVENPORT in April 1852 Lawrence Co., Arkansas. Only person I can find in 1860 is Rhody CARPENTER DEAVENPORT in Richwoods, Lawrence Co, Arkansas.

Edmund named children: Rhody, Marilda, Louis. Edmund's dau. Marilda married Leonard SINGLETON (s/o James & Susan SINGLETON, James is prob. brother to Alison, father of James Patran who married James Henry GOUGH's dau. Margaret)
    Matilda named children: Rhodica, Edmund
Rhodica named children: Riley, Malinda (but there are Riley STANFILLs in 1820's so may be a STANFILL name)
Lewis Riley married a Marinda, named children: Edmund, Amanda. His dau. Amanda married James Burns SINGLETON who is prob. related to the other SINGLETONs
James Henry named children: Lewis, Amanda and grandson named Louis Riley. Dau. Margaret married James Patran SINGLETON who is probably related to the other SINGLETONs.

    1830 Henderson Co., TN
Henry GAWF one male 20-30 (Henry was 21)
one male 15-20 (Lewis? he was 19)
    female 20-30 (Matilda? she was 21, her 1st child b. 1832, Rodica's b. in 1831 so Rodica's probably married)
    female 40-50 (?mother?)

Rhodicia named a son "Riley" Taylor STANFILL. Lewis GOFF's middle name is probably "Riley". Henry GOUGH has a grandson named Louis Riley GOUGH.

FatherB married MotherX. MotherX was born in 1765; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  MotherX was born in 1765; and died.

    Notes:

We know that Henry married after 1830 and went to KY. Lewis stayed in TN with the older woman and now was head of the household. It makes sense that Lewis & mother lived with Henry. When Henry married and moved, the mother moved in with Lewis. Henry Gough 1830 census 1 male 15-20 that I believe was Lewis. Lewis was 19 in 1830. 1 male 20-30 that was Henry.
