  1. 12.  John Baptist Gough was born on 29 Jan 1767 in St. Mary's County, Maryland (son of James Gough, III and Susannah Tarleton); died on 19 Feb 1839 in White Sulphur, Scott County, KY; was buried in St. Francis Cemetery, White Sulphur, Scott County. KY.

    Notes:

Linda and Jim; I agree that the evidence seems point to JBG (MO) being the son of James and Susanna __________. That leaves two potential parents and one remaining JBG. If we assume that JBG (ScottCo)'s birth date is wrong, then he could fit with both JBG, Sr. and James III. If JBG (ScottCo) is the son of JBG, Sr. then if my math is correct, JBG Jr. and James III are first cousins. It would be perfectly logical for first cousins to travel together. Perhaps James, Jr. help raise JBG, Jr. after the death of his parents. And they were like brothers. The sole source for JBG (ScottCo) is his tombstone and we know it is in error. Darn, we need to verify that tombstone.

I'm working this material right now, but from what you've sent me, I agree that John Baptist Gough, b. 1767 was the son of James and Susanna. He did not serve during the Rev. War. He would have been too young.

2/1780: John Baptist Gough, orphan of James, over the age of 14, chose Vincent Norris as his guardian. Securities: Bennet Norris and John Baptist Raley. (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick).

John Baptist Gough orphan of James Gough above the age of fourteen comes into court and makes choice of Vincent Norris his guardian who being present accepts of the same. Bennet Norris and John Baptist Railey securitys penalty L 10000 current money Bond taken.

I would assume that John Baptist Gough would have been between 15-18 years of age (1762-1765). That is if 18 was the break off year for being an orphan; not sure on the laws of the time.

    Thanks,
    Rose Hollingsworth

Whoever placed the tombstone at the site of the grave of John Baptist Gough in 1839 or perhaps much later, didn't know when he was born and tried to force-fit the John Baptist Gough who said he was born 2/29/1764. Linda Reno

Mike, for what its worth the book says Birth records at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. This entry is for JBG the son of James & Susanna? (18 Feb, 1764)

The other JBG could have been born on 29 Feb. 1764 as is indicated on his Pension App. Just makes it more confusing.

This was another John Baptist Gough who also was born in St. Mary's Co., MD on 2-29-1767, d. 2-19-1839 Pius, Scott Co., KY, m. 6-1-1796 St. Mary's Co., MD Mary Jones b. 3-9-1770 MD, d. 6-16-1809 Scott Co., KY. This John Baptist Gough was the son of James Gough (1748-1826) and Susanna Medley (1746-1795). My 5th great Grandfather John Baptist Gough b. 3-29-1764 St. Andrews Parish, St. Mary's Co., MD was the son of James Gough (1728-1774) and Susanna. Michael Mudd

Ben Webb mentions in Centenary of Catholicity in Kentucky on pages 89 and 90 two John B(aptist) Goughs: "John B. Gough died in 1869, aged of 102. .... there were attached to the settlement in Scott (County) quite a number of others and of unmarried Catholics, the names of whom, as far as could ascertained were: John B. Gough, Jr., who died in 1828, at the age of 53 years:" .... MJG

Linda and Jim; I found a copy of the 1810 ScottCo, KY census.
    John B. Gough
    1800-1810 1 Male, 8 females
    1794-1800 1 Male
    1766-1784 1 Male, 1 Female
    Bef 1765 2 Females

It appears that Sarah had her own four? daughters. These following male Goughs are buried next to Mary and could be the two missing male children:

    > 57 George Gough 1798 April 23, 1821
    >
    > 58 Henry Gough 1800 May 20, 1819
    >
Are the names George and Henry the name of a grandfather?

There are two older women in the house. Mothers, aunts?

Do we have source that the B. stood for Baptist? Everything that I've seen says John B. Gough. I have seen this person referred to as John Benjamin Gough. Probably doesn't make a difference.

Another piece of this puzzle but not an edge piece.

    Mike

    Mike,

I found it also, did you notice just two lines above John B. was an entry for James Gough.

    James had:

    2 M 10 to 16
    2 M 16 t0 26
    1 M over 45
    1 F 10 to 16
    1 F 16 to 26
    1 F over 45

    Also found Cornelius Gough.

The 1820 census has John B., James & Ignatius.

1830 has only John B. with several small children.

    1 M 5 to 10
    1 M 10 to 15
    1 M 15 to 20
    1 M 20 to 30
    1 M 60 to 70 If John B. was born in 1767 this would make him 63.
    1 F 15 to 20
    1 F 50 to 60

So where does this leave us, it proves there was only one John B. in Scott Co. at this time. I still don't feel that he belongs to James III, there is too much of a spread between John B.'s age and the other children of James III.

    Linda Reno's comments:

Mary Medley was born November 14, 1768 (not 1778).

Since Mary Medley died in 1809, Sarah Jenkins would have had to have been a second wife, not a first.

You have no birth date for Ann Melissa Gough, but according to the 1850 census, she was born in KY in 1805.

    1. James R. Gough was born on 23 May 1812 in Kentucky; died on 13 May 1842 in Monroe County, Missouri; was buried in St. Peter's Cemetery, Old Clinton, Monroe County, Missouri.
