Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Charles Mattingly was born in 1807 in Hardinsburg, Breckinridge County, Kentucky, USA (son of Zachariah Mattingly and Martha Ann Beaven); died in 1877 in Cannelton, Perry County, Indiana.

    Notes:

Appears in Meade County, Kentucky during census of 1850. Mary Ruth Bye identified 13 children based on Baptismal records.

The 1860 census finds Charles, minus his wife, in Cannelton, Perry County, Indiana. There's a bit of confusion with names of some of the children. For instance: Joseph, twin to Robert, is now named as James; Winifred during 1850 is now named Catherine; and the male child named James aged 1 in 1850, is now a daughter, aged 11 and named Julia.

The Cannelton census of 1870 finds Charles living with his daughter Susan and her family.

Charles married Julia Gough about 1827 in Kentucky. Julia (daughter of Cornelius Gough and Winnifred Wright "Winney" Thomasson) was born in 1806 in Brandenburg, Meade County, Kentucky; died on 21 Dec 1853 in Meade County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Julia Gough was born in 1806 in Brandenburg, Meade County, Kentucky (daughter of Cornelius Gough and Winnifred Wright "Winney" Thomasson); died on 21 Dec 1853 in Meade County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

I placed Julia as a child of Corrnelius and Winnifred. My case is purely circumstantial but I am pretty sure she is related to this Gough branch; the question is which one.

    Surnames: Gough, Mattingly
    Classification: Query

I'm looking for the parents and siblings of Julia Gough b. ca 1806 (in Ky?). She married Charles Mattingly in Ky ca 1827.

I believe Julia could be descended from James Gough III and Susannah Tarleton; perhaps an unknown child of Cornelius Gough and Winnifred Wright "Winney" Thomasson.

    Here is my circumstantial case;

    * I do not have a marriage date for Cornelius and Winnifred but their birth dates support an unknown child who was Julia's age.

    * Some of James and Susannah's grandchildren and/or Cornelius' children settled in Meade County. Julia could be a "lost" grandchild or Child. In the 1850 Meade County Census she was living four addresses from Thomas J. Gough and Agnes Burch; and Edward A. Stewart and Matilda Gough. Thomas J. Gough and Matilda were children of Cornelius and Winnifred Gough.

    * James and Susannah Tarleton Gough had a daughter named Julia who would be Julia Gough Mattingly's aunt.

    * Charles and Julia Gough Mattingly named a child Cornelius Mattingly; perhaps the namesake of her father, Cornelius Gough.

    * The christening sponsor for Cornelius Mattingly was Teresa Gough who could be the Theresa Gough who was the daughter of Cornelius Gough

I have no other candidate families.

"The Centenary Of Catholicity in Kentucky", page 420 by Hon Ben J. Webb."

He is describing the mission in Meade Co. KY.

"The congregation (of Meade County) at the date given (abt 1824) was composed, for the most part, of the families of James Mills, Henry Greenwell, Wilfred Greenwell, Anthony Livers, Guy Livers, Ignatius Elder, ________ O'Brien, Noble Wright, Mrs. Henrietta Alvey, John Manning, Cornelius Gough, Joseph Pike, Oliver Burch, Peter Jarboe, Walter Reid, Peter Bruner, Henry Alvey, and Caleb Brown." ....

married Winifred (Thomason?)(niece of Nelson Thomason)

From the book "The History of Ky Illustrated 1866" William Henry Gough, a highly esteemed citizen of Brandenburg, Meade Co., Ky was born Oct 30, 1826 in Breckinridge County. His grandfather, Cornelius Gough, was an early settler in that county, removing with his family from Scott County, KY. He settled on the Ohio River near Flint Island and developed a farm. Cornelius Gough died Dec 10, 1833 of cholera, while on a trading expedition in the South. He had seven children, the eldest of whom was Thomas J. Gough, the father of William Henry Gough. He was born in Scott County KY, March 3, 1805, received a good English education and served in the several offices of constable, jailer and associate justice of Breckinridge County. Having removed to Meade County, he was elected to the State Legislature in 1837 and was a member of the constitutional convention of 1849. He also served that county as school commissioner for several years, and until his death, August 5, 1873. His first marriage, was August 9, 1825 to Miss Teresa Burch, daughter of Walter Burch. She was born January 2, 1805 and died May 9, 1841, leaving two children, viz.: William H. and Susan (deceased wife of Lewis Pullen). He then married Agnes Burch, who died without issue, after which he contracted an alliance with Christina McGill, who still survived him and is the mother of Mary C. (Popham). William H. Gough was chiefly reared and educated in Meade County, and in 1849 became deputy sheriff and was elected the first sheriff of Meade County under the present constitution, serving one term, from which time until 1870 he engaged in farming. In the last named year he was elected to the office of clerk of the Meade County Court, a position he has held for the past sixteen years. He married in 1854, Mrs. Columbia (Philpott) Burch, widow of John H. Burch. She was born in Meade County and is a daughter of John F. Philpott and Emaline Hardin. Mr. Gough is one of the most influential men of Meade County, a Democrat in politics and a member of the Catholic Church.

Cornelius married Winnifred Wright "Winney" Thomasson. Winnifred was born on 2 Dec 1783 in Louisa Co, VA; died on 29 Oct 1837 in Rhodelia, Meade County, Kentucky; was buried in St. Theresa Cemetery, Rhodelia, Meade Co., KY. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Winnifred Wright "Winney" Thomasson was born on 2 Dec 1783 in Louisa Co, VA; died on 29 Oct 1837 in Rhodelia, Meade County, Kentucky; was buried in St. Theresa Cemetery, Rhodelia, Meade Co., KY.

    Notes:

Winifred seems to be a troublemaker with me. I know that the Winifred who married a Ben Gough & a James Gough who were cousins is correct as I have her obit from MO and other tidbits about her. Why did I list Cornelius's wife as the same name? I'm not sure. I thought I had something that told me that was her name but am unable to find it. Everything that I can find lists her just as "Winifred" and no surname. One court record in KY said she is "the niece of Nelson Thomason". For this reason some people assumed her last name was Thomason BUT that would not be the case if Nelson were her mother's brother. I think I'll change her name to just Winifred until something more concrete comes along. Bill Korstick

Do you have any information that would show if Sarah were related to a Nelson Thomason born in Scott Co., Kentucky? He married Sallie (last name unknown) and had three daughters. Two of the daughters names are not known; one was Mary L(Louise?) Thomason who married J. S. McKendrick.

Winifred Thomason/Kendrick was the niece of Nelson Thomason. She married Cornelius Gough

    Descendants of Winifred Thomason/Kendrick

    . +Cornelius Gough d: December 10, 1833 in Rhodelia, KY.

I have not found a strong source for either Thomason or Kendrick. I see Nelson, Thomason and Kendrick in your message. Could she be related to your Thomasons or McKendricks?

    Thanks

Winnifred Wright "Winney" Thomasson marr. Cornelius Gough before 1805 in Scott Co, KY. Winney was born 2 Dec 1783 in Louisa Co, VA, the daughter of William Thomasson (est. 1751-1793) & Elizabeth Hallom. William was a son of Samuel Thomasson, Sr. (est. 1722-est. 1792).

Cornelius & Winney are in the Scott KY 1810 census, as are other descendants of her grandfather, Samuel. Her parents were deceased.

Samuel Thomasson Sr.'s parents are unknown. (His father was NOT Samuel Thomson.)

Nelson was Winney's cousin, not uncle.
