Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Matthew Elliott was born in 1797 in Kentucky (son of Stephen Elliott and Mary "Polly" Dant); died in 1872 in Ralls County, Missouri.

Matthew married Mariah Elliott before 1827. Mariah was born in 1800 in Washington County, Kentucky; died in 1840 in Elliottsville, Monroe Co., MO. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Matthew married Matilda Elizabeth Mitchell on 8 Feb 1841 in Indian Creek Settlement, Monroe Co., MO. Matilda was born in 1808 in Kentucky; died after 1850 in Ralls Co., MO.. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Stephen Elliott was born about 1767 in St Mary's County, Maryland; died after 1808 in Pottinger Creek, Nelson County, KY.

    Notes:

According to Kentucky marriages (Ancestry.com), J. B. Dant married Elizabeth
Shircliffe, 8/9/1792, Nelson Co., KY. I am assuming that this is Elizabeth
Mattingly, widow of Thomas Shercliffe (d. 1787).

I had not been aware that Thomas Shercliffe's will was also probated in KY.
I would, therefore, assume that he made the will when he was living in St.
Mary's County (June 15, 1786) and then left for KY and died there by July
27, 1787 (probate date). If you'll notice, Bennett Mattingly was a witness
to his will (brother of Elizabeth Mattingly, wife of Thomas Shercliffe).
Also notice that Thomas Shercliffe (probably a son of Thomas Shercliffe and
Elizabeth Mattingly) is one of the witnesses to the will of John Baptist
    Dant in 1808.

I have Bennet and Elizabeth Mattingly (no indication her middle name was
Hopewell) as the children of John Mattingly, Jr. (d. 1759) and his wife,
Elizabeth Brewer. John Mattingly, Jr. was the son of John Mattingly (d.
1744) and first wife (name not known). John Mattingly (d. 1744) was the son
of Ceasar Mattingly and Jane Suttle.

Mary Dant must have been the daughter of John Baptist Dant and Elizabeth
Mattingly as she appears to have married Stephen Elliott (Ann's son by
    Matthew Elliott).

    Linda Reno

Stephen married Mary "Polly" Dant before 1797. Mary (daughter of John Baptist Dant and Susanna Gough) was born before 1779 in St Mary's County, Maryland; died after 1808 in Washington County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mary "Polly" Dant was born before 1779 in St Mary's County, Maryland (daughter of John Baptist Dant and Susanna Gough); died after 1808 in Washington County, Kentucky.

    1. Susanna Elliott was born in 1791; died in 1870.
    2. 1. Matthew Elliott was born in 1797 in Kentucky; died in 1872 in Ralls County, Missouri.
    3. Elizabeth Elliott was born before 1808 in Kentucky; and died.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  John Baptist Dant was born in 1745 in St. Mary's County, MD; died on 1 Feb 1808 in Pottinger Creek, Washington Co., KY; was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Holy Cross, Marion Co., KY.

    Notes:

John Baptist Dant, a native of St. Mary's County, Maryland, was the son of John Dant. He inherited a plantation styled "Hopewell from his father in 1763. He was the brother of, at least: Ann (Dant) Spalding, Charles Dant, J. Francis Excol Dant, and Mary Ann (Dant) Mills.

John Baptist Dant married first to Susannah Gough, daughter of James and Priscilla (Heard) Gough, in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

He married secondly to the widow Elizabeth (Hopewell) Shircliff, daughter of Bennett Hopewell and the widow of Thomas Shircliffe, Sr. in Nelson County VA (now KY). Their marriage bond was dated July 26, 1791 and was witnessed by Stephen Elliottt.

All of his children were by his first wife. He was the father of at least, James Dant, 17xx-18xx; Joseph Dant, 17xx-1833; Mary (Dant) Elliott, 17xx-18xx; and Ann Dant, 17xx-xxxx.

In his will he mentions these grandchildren: Polly Dant, Eliza Elliott, Teresa Dant, Susannah Elliott , and Ann Elliott. He mentions slaves named: Sucky, Steven and his wife Dianna, Mary, and Steven. He mentions "the 100 acres on which I now live." He mentions crops and farm animals. He makes his son James Dant, his executor. The witnesses to this will were: John Lancaster, Thomas Shircliff [Jr.], Wilfred Newton, and John Riggs. This will can be seen in Washington County, KY Will Book "A" on page 478 in Springfield, KY.

In the 1799 Tax List for Washington (now Marion) County, KY John Baptist Dant was listed with 100 acres of third rate land on Pottinger's Creek, which had been registered in the name of Coleman Brown, four blacks and six horses. I

John married Susanna Gough between 1764 and 1767 in St. Mary's County, MD. Susanna (daughter of James Gough, II and Priscilla Heard) was born before 1752 in St. Mary's County, MD; died after 1770. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Susanna Gough was born before 1752 in St. Mary's County, MD (daughter of James Gough, II and Priscilla Heard); died after 1770.

    Notes:

I agree that Susanna Gough married a Dant, but I don't know that it's necessarily true that it was John Baptist Dant. She wasn't married at the time of her father's will in 1764 but she was by 1767 when her mother made hers. Linda Reno

In my opinion, there is not enough proof to indicate that Susanna Gough was married to John Baptist Dant. She could have been a first wife of Charles Dant (brother of John Baptist Dant).

Deed to Charles Dant from Abraham Rhodes for "Part of Addition", 18 ac., 6/7/1787 (Chr. of SM). Remember that Abraham Rhodes was the husband of Mary Gough, daughter of James and Priscilla.

So....at least for the time being, I show Susanna Gough married to _____Dant. Linda Reno

I have Susanna Gough married to _____Dant, but don't have his first name. They were married between 1764-1767. She could have been the first wife of Charles Dant or a first wife of John Baptist Dant. Other possible husbands were 2 more sons of John Dant and Eleanor--James or Joseph Francis Xavier. It's one of them, that's for sure.

No record of an Elizabeth Hopewell Shercliffe.

    Dear Tom.

This Will is of John Greenwell son of James Greenwell and Grace Taylor. This John Greenwell married Catherine Wiseman daughter of John Wiseman and Catherine Miles daughter of Francis Miles. John Greenwell was a brother to Charles Greenwell who married Mary_____, and Grace Greenwell who married Thomas Clarke son of Robert Clarke Sr. And Sarah Combs.

His brother Henry Greenwell married Eleanor Clarke daughter of Robert Clarke Sr. And Sarah Combs. His brother James Greenwell Married Sarah Clarke daughter of Robert Clarke Sr. and Sarah Combs.

Grace Greenwell and 1st husband Thomas Clarke had a son John Clarke born abt 1724/25 who married Eleanor Gough daughter of James Gough and Priscilla Heard. Eleanor Gough (Clarke) married 2nd to John Basil Greenwell son of John Greenwell and Catherine Wiseman. John Basil Greenwell and John Clarke were 1st cousins. Eleanor Gough (Clarke) (Greenwell) married third to James Wheatly.

Tom you may want to correct this in your records when you state that Henry Greenwell married Eleanor Gough. I'm afraid that is not possible. I have the Church records as well as the inventory of Eleanor Gough's husband's.

    Mike,

There's nothing in William Chandler's will extract that indicates he or James Gauff Jr ever lived in Virginia. Here's the extract per Al Goff:

*1725.* Charles Co MD - will of *Wm Chandler *"to poor Roman Catholics". Test. Jesse Dayne, John Hington, J*ames Gauff* Jr.

This is probably taken from the abstract that I'm attaching. I believe this indicates that William Chandler was deceased by 1730. Witness Jesse Dayne is given as Jesse Doyne in the published transcript. A quick Internet search shows him in St. Mary's Co., MD and Charles Co., MD at different times:

    http://files.usgwarchives.net/md/stmarys/wills/doyne.txt

    http://books.google.com/books?id=jS7v4WpHnykC&pg=PA98&lpg=PA98&dq=%22j esse+doyne%22&source=bl&ots=QHL6lw2Cy-&sig=IBKyZlYyHMAAUtc3goYDkzdcn_8 &hl=en&ei=Rn75SZz9L8Xktgfa3MmRAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum= 3

John Hington is also given as John Hinkson in the transcript I provided. When Jesse Doyne of Charles Co., MD wrote his will in 1726 (a year after Chandler), John Hinkson was a witness. Also note that the full phrase in the abstract is "the poor Roman Catholics of this and St. Mary's Counties..."

James married Priscilla Heard before 1735 in St. Mary's County, MD. Priscilla was born before 1720 in St. Mary's County, MD; died on 1 Nov 1767 in St. Mary's County, MD. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 15.  Priscilla Heard was born before 1720 in St. Mary's County, MD; died on 1 Nov 1767 in St. Mary's County, MD.
