    Notes:

William and Ruby's family trees are contained in another file.William "Beverly" was born in Union Co. KY. He was a businessman that engaged in a number of pursuits. Before the depression he was assuming the notes of default farmers and sharing the profits as he engaged in agribusiness. His son said that he lost everything during the depression when he covered the loans of his "tenant" farmers. He moved to Evansville IN in 1929 and worked for a while as a watchman in a factory before his death. William Beverly's death notice from the paper says: 2 brothers, Leslie, Los Angeles & James R. Detroit and 2 sisters, Sister M. Charles and Mrs. Beulah Grisham, Dearborn Mich.

About your Grandfather. I was only about nine years old when he died and did not know that much about him. He was living in Evansville, IN and I can remember him coming to see us in Uniontown, KY. He came down one time and had a new car and took us for a ride. I don't know what model it was - I just remember how happy we all were because it was the first time we had ever ridden in any car other that a Model T, or a Model B. Ford. My brother (Vincent) bought a used car when he first moved to Evansville and I believe he bought it from Uncle Beverly.

Henry married Mary Cordelia Gough on 23 Jan 1883 in Union County, Kentucky. Mary (daughter of Benjamin Joseph "Benj" Gough and Susan J. 2. 5.  Mary Cordelia Gough was born on 3 Mar 1860 in Daviess County, Kentucky (daughter of Benjamin Joseph "Benj" Gough and Susan J. McGill); died on 9 Aug 1898 in Union County, Kentucky; was buried in St. Agnes Cemetery, Uniontown, Union County, KY.

    Notes:

Mary Cordelia and Henry Sherman are fifth cousins once and twice removed. She was from Daviess Co. KY and the daughter of Benedict Joseph "Benj" Gough and Susanne McGill. Benjamin is a decendant of Cornelius Gough from Meade Co. KY. We got August 09, 1893 for Cordelia's death date from St. Agne's records. We weren't able to read the exact date on her tombstone. I believe it should be 1898 since her daughter Beulah was born in 1895. Confusing a 3 for and 8 is an understandable mistake.

According to a shanks relative; Jame Duke, Teresa had two children and died shortly after the second:

Subject also referred to as Mary Amelia and Mary Emelia.b.27 FEB 1825,d.16 AUG 1892. She m to George Alvey,24 or 29 AUG 1842,Union Co. Marriage Book AA pp 218-175. Children; Teresa Ann b.8 AUG 1843 and James George b.12 JUL 1848. There may be others. George Alvey died 17 MAR 1848. He had previously been married to Teresa Bright b.26 OCT 1820, d. 13 OCT 1839. They had two children;Mary Elizabeth Alvey b.7 FEB 1838 and Peter Alvey b. 8 OCT 1839. Teresa died one week(5 days) after Peter's birth. Mary Emily Shanks Alvey then m(2) Thomas Gough. Children of this marriage believed to be (from various sources) Minerva b.1852, Francis b.1854, William b.1857, Henry Sherman b.1858, James Madison b.1861, Alfred and Ida (twins) b.1866. There may be others. Family states nine children. Was there a Herman? The missing two may be John Joseph and Francis Elizabeth (twins )born to Martha A. Shanks from illicit union. Martha was daughter of Charles and Lydia Shanks. In my geneology I have a Charles Shanks. He married Lydia Wethington. I know they had at least one child, Martha Ann Shanks, b. 1824. She was married in Union Co. Ky, on 29 Dec. 1851. My info is from sketchy notes from baptism records, marriages, census and from other researchers---maybe incomplete---but what I show should be good. I hope to see most of you at the MD/KY reunion at end of this month. Best Regards, James L. Duke

Another geneologist found these children in Mary Emily's household in 1850. The math works. Its probably not a big deal but it might be an anwer to someone's unsolved myster.

In Reply to: Looking for Mary Ellen Shanks wife of Thomas Gough by Mike Gough of 22425

Hi. I found Mary E. Alvey, on the 1850 Union Co. census. Listed was Mary E. Alvey 25, Mary E. 12, William 10, L.A. (female) 6, John R. 4, George 1. Also in her household was John Gough 45, Thomas Shanks 71, M. Shanks(female) 63. I have a marriage CD, that goes up to 1850, so her marriage to Thomas Gough wasn't listed, but I did find her marriage to George Alvey, 8-29-1842. He first married Teresa Bright, in Union 6-4-1837. So the first two children listed, were her step-children. Next door to Mary, was an Ann Alvey 65, born Md. and daughter Polly 37. Next to them, was a John Alvey 34. Poss. mother and siblings to George Alvey. Also, nearby was a Joseph Gough 55, Elizabeth 57, Anne 30, Thomas 29, Dolly 23, Charles 23, Edward 21, John 17, A.E. (female) 3. Hope this helps some.

"Mary Emily Shanks (25 February 1825-16 August 1892 Union County, KY) was named for her oldest sister who died just prior to her birth. She married on 29 August 1842 1) George Alvey, son of John Floyd and Henrietta Ann (Clements) Alvey; he was born on 11 September 1817 in Union County where he died on 17 March 1848. Widowed, Mary Emily married 2) Thomas Gough in 1850; born on 8 February 1821 in Springfield, KY, he was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Walker) Gough and died in Union County on 30 May 1879. Mary Emily and Thomas Gough were the parents of nine children: Minerva Mildred who married John Brown, Frances Alice who married George Benjamin Gough, William Beverly who married a woman named Katherine and settled in Rock Lake, WA, Henry Sherman who married 1) Mary Cordelia Gough and 2) Mary Ann Mackey, James Madison who married Josephine Amanda Jones, Ella S. who died at 18, Alfred Edward who died at 21, George Joseph who married Cora Ophelia Pickard and settled in Jackson, TN; and Ida Martin who married Charles Ignatius Beaven and settled in Kansas City, KS."

In "The Centenary Of Catholicy in Kentucky", page 420 by Hon Ben J. Webb, he described the mission in Meade Co. KY.

"The congregation (of Meade County) at the date given (abt 1824) was composed, for the most part, of the families of James Mills, Henry Greenwell, Wilfred Greenwell, Anthony Livers, Guy Livers, Ingatius Elder, ________ O'Brien, Noble Wright, Mrs. Henrietta Alvey, John Manning, Cornelius Gough, Joseph Pike, Oliver Burch, Peter Jarboe, Walter Reid, Peter Bruner, Henry Alvey, and Caleb Brown." .... This church became St. Teresa's.

From a private researcher, Bill Korstick we got the following information: "Notes on a William H Gough(1814-1842) & Susan Mahala Burch and their 6 children in KY. One son is Benedict Joseph Gough, born 1837, married Julia M Fenwick."

The following was found in the Davies Co. library: From the Breckinridge County Kentucky "Additional Early Marriage Records"

"December 28, 1864 - Benedict J. Gough, 27, farmer, 2nd marriage, b. Meade County, Kentucky, resident of Daviess County, Kentucky, (father and mother b. Meade County), to Juliann M. Fenwick, 23, (father b. Breckinridge County, Mother b. Kentucky ); John O. Clark,

I went to the Willard Library in Eville today. I found the reference to the marriage of Benedict J and Juliann M Fenwick that you referenced. It is page 88 in the Breckinridge County Kentucky Records Vol 2 by Michael Lewis Cook and Bettie Anne Cummings Cook.

Martha Monarch's Marriage bond was signed by Benj Goff and D. McGill. I suspect that Benj was a nickname for Benedict Joseph. That would explain the sometimes appearance of the name Benjamin in some of the documentation.

There is a listing for George S. Gough, Daviss County, Ky., in the 1900 Census for Kentucky. Some of the names are very difficult to read and decipher.
Gough, George S., head, Mar 1867, 33, Ky
anana, wife, Sept 1874, 25, Ky
George, son, Jan 1895, 5, Ky
    Anahala E., daughter, Jan 1897, 3, Ky
Gladys, daughter, Feb 1900, 4/12, Ky
Benjamen, father, Mar 1835, 65, Ky
George and anana had been married 6 years, with 4 children born to them, and 3 children living in 1900.

I received some information about the same Census record from another researcher.

"Mike there is a Benj. Gough listed as Father , born in May 1835, Ky/Md/Ky. married 35 yrs. [wife not listed] living in the household of Geo. S. Gough in the 1900 census. Judy"

First the father's name is spelled "Benj" rather than Benjamin. I have found other places where the spelling Benj was used. I think Benj may be a short for Ben J; sort of a nickname. This might explain why some researcher's substitute Benjamin for it. Also, Second, it implies Ann is still alive. I would expect Ann to still be alive and she might just be.

George Samuel Gough's death certificate said his father was Benedict Gough.

Benjamin married Susan J. McGill on 28 Oct 1857 in Daviess County, Kentucky. Susan was born about 1833 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; died in 1864 in Daviess County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Susan J. McGill was born about 1833 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; died in 1864 in Daviess County, Kentucky.

I have a copy of a marriage bond between Benj. GOFF and Mrs. Susan J. Monarch surety by D. McGill and signed with the name of Dennis or David (?) McGill dated 21st day of October 1857.

I have the marriage books at home and I found the marriage to his 2nd wife.

Benedict J. Gough, 27, farmer, 2nd marriage, b. Meade Co., KY resident Daviess Co. KY. To Juliann M. Fenwick, 23, (parents Breckinridge Co.) John O. Clark, bondsman; to be married December 28, 1864 at Hardinsburg.

His marriage to Susan McGill will probably be in Meade Co. and she probably is buried in a Meade Co. Cemetery. The McGill's in Breckinridge Co. are buried in St. Romuald Catholic Church Cem. So I'm thinking St. Theresa's Catholic Church Cem. in Meade Co. or it could be Daviess Co. since he was a resident. we have books on both counties. If you want a copy of the marriages I will need your snail mail address send it to the archives e-mail breckarc@bbtel.com that way it will stay private.
