I was just looking at this again and wondering where did you get the dates of birth for Mathew Nevett and Eleanor Jarboe also do you know for a fact that she was a Jarboe??? Dorothy Nevitt would have been born before 1795 as her gr grandfather John Ford left her his second best bed and furniture. in his will of 1794...Also her sister Ann was left a negro boy named Peter...Smcmd. wills.

James Gough married Dorothy Nevitt 1814 Nelson County, Ky. Marriages

he is shown living with son William Gough in Daviess County, Ky in 1850 Census.

Had previously lived in Spencer County, Ky where he had a home and blacksmith shop

I have copy of picture of home and blacksmith shop..also papers regarding turn over of shop. upon moving to Daviess County he turned property over to son in law Samuel Snider with provisions that he take care of Ellen Gough Snider and her children. I have copy of marriage bond with James Gough signing for Ellen to marry Samuel Snider.

Hiram Gough was also mentioned as blacksmith at same shop. Hiram married Melissa Thompson sister of William Gough's wife Mildred Thompson both daughters of Charles Thompson and Jane Nevitt Thompson, another daughter of Matthew Nevitt and Eleanor. Hiram and William had farms later back to back in Daviess County .Ky ky illustrated map.. .James believed to have died about 1854 in Daviess County Ky.

    REGARDING
James Gough, that married Dorothy Nevitt in 1814 dau of Matthew Nevitt and Eleanor.

Have found a James Gough living with Gough family in Spencer County Census 1850

he is 65yr. old Have access to paperwork where he mortgaged land house and blacksmith shop in Spencer Co. to his son-in-law Samuel Snider in 1847..His daughter was Ellen Gough and James is living with Wm Gough and Mildred Thompson Gough, in Daviess County 1850 Census..Mildred Gough was a sister of Melissa Thompson who married Hiram Gough. a blacksmith who also worked at the blacksmith shop or a time in Spencer co. ky wound up in Daviess County with farm back to back with William ... NOW WHAT I HOPE TO FIND OUT DOES ANYONE KNOW IF JAMES AND DOROTHY HAD HIRAM AND WILLIAM SONS, AND DAU. ELLEN WAS THERE ANY OTHER CHILDREN ...DOES ANYONE KNOW?

I sent a picture of James Gough's house and Blacksmith shop in Taylorsville, (Spencer County) to the Kentuky Spence Count web page a couple of years ago. I found these two pictures in an album of my grandmothers, Henriette Victoria Hillerich (married to Francis Sachs) her mother was Caroline Snider/Hillerich daughter of Ellen Gough (Snider )and Samuel Snider. In the blacksmith shop one of Ellen's sons (on the left) has reddish blonde hair. I had wondered previously where that comes from? Now I know it most likely is the Gough side.

Thanks for all the wonderful info you have already forwarded.

24 Oct., 1802, Between Mark Manning and Wife Margaret and John B. Gough for 131 acres, 16 pounds current money of Kentucky. (Margaret Manning is sister of Elizabeth Heard, and daughter of John Basil Heard.) I have been unable to find record of sale of this 131 acres when JBG moved to Shelby Co. Also have no idea how much 16 pounds is worth, I surmised that it was the proceeds of the land he inherited from father James.

I have always figured he was 17 when he entered the service in 1781, and 16 when Vincent Norris was appointed as Guardian in 1780. Since this is 6 years after the death of his father I'm wondering if this was due to the death of his Mother.

    ______________________________________________________________________ ___________________
There was no leap year in 1767, therefore the birthdate of February 29, 1767 is wrong (JBG, Scott Co., KY). This is the JBG, son of James and Susanna, who was baptized 2/18/1764 at St. Andrew's.

I also believe the birth date of John Baptist Gough of February 29, 1764 and died in Perry Co. in 1835 is wrong as well. Even though he gave oath that he never served as a substitute, he did.

A Return of Draughts and Substitutes sent from SMC under the Act of May Session to join the troops at Annapolis. Substituted 7/29/1781. (Archives of MD). Baptis Gough.

To sign up, he would have had to be at least 18 (born 1763 or before). And you know, Mike, the more I think about it, I wonder if John Baptist Gough (d. in Perry Co., MO) didn't try to obtain some proof of his age prior to filing for a pension and the family sent him the wrong information from St. Andrew's, that's why it's so messed up. Let's face it, most of these people were uneducated, and in many cases, really had no idea when their birthday was.

In checking my records I haven't been able to find more than 2 John Baptist Goughs in the late 1700s and early 1800s in Ky. It's possible that you have data that I haven't found. In the second census of KY I find one in Scott Co. and I believe he remained there until his death. My John Baptist first appeared in Nelson Co. in 1788 along with John Basil Heard his father-in-law.

After Washington Co. was formed he appeared on their tax list until he moved to Shelby Co. in 1814. He is shown on the 1816 Shelby tax owning 150 acres,George and James are also there. In 1817 John B. gives George 75 acres of his farm as they now appear with 75 acres each. I've been unable to fine any record of this transation. According to another court record, George is living next door to John B. Spencer Co. was formed from part of Shelby Co. and John B. continued to live there until he moved to IL in 1832. George dies in 1836.
I did find a John Goff in Shelby Co.in 1794, 95, and 96, but nothing more after that time.

I'm really glad to hear from you and the other Gough cousins. I don't know how much info. you have--I have a copy of John B.'s pension application along with his Father' and Grandfather's wills.

I misplaced your home address and phone number.

Here are two transcripts from John Baptist Gough's Pension Application dated 13 Nov. 1833 Perrry Co., MO

Question: Where and in what year were you born-
Answer: I was born in the parish of St. Andrews in St. Mary's County in the State of Maryland on the twenty ninth of February, seventeen hundred and sixth four.

Question: Have you any record of your age?
Answer: I have none but my birth is registered in the Parish of Saint Andrews in the County of St. Mary's in the State of Maryland.

Question: Where were you living when called into service, where have you lived since the Revolutionary War and where do you live now?
Answer: When called into service I was living in St. Mary's County Maryland after the Revolutionary War I continued to reside in Saint Mary's County in the State of Maryland until the year seventeen hundred and eighty seven when I moved to Nelson now Washington County Kentucky, remained until the year eighteen hundred and fourteen when removed to Shelby County Kentucky when in the year eighteen hundred twenty five the County of Shelby having divided I fell in the County of Spencer in said state where I continued to reside until April 1832 when I moved to Randolph County in the State of Illinois, where remained until October 1833, and in October 1833 moved to Perry County in the State of Missouri, which is my present residence.

This proves that this John Baptist Gough b. 29 Feb., 1764 and died in Perry County MO never lived in Scott Co., KY.

    >
    > It appears by the case stated for the court's opinion, that Ignatius Gough being seised in fee of the land mentioned in the declaration in this cause, in the year 1782 duly made and executed his last will and testament, and thereby devised the land in question as follows: "First of all I desire that all my just debts be paid; and my will and desire is, that all my plantation and tract of land lying in Saint Mary's county, called Saint Margaret's, containing 147 acres, be in possession of Elizabeth Herd, for the use and maintenance of her and her daughter Mary Herd, until the said Mary Herd, daughter of the same Elizabeth Herd, and granddaughter of John Basil Herd, arrives to the years of sixteen, then the said land to belong to the said Mary Herd, and to her heirs and assigns, forever."
    >
    > That the said Mary Herd, in the said will mentioned, was the natural, illegitimate daughter of the testator, by the said Elizabeth Herd. That the said Mary Herd died under the age of sixteen, unmarried, intestate, and without issue. That the plantation on which the testator lived, consisted of several tracts of land, the whole of which amounted to 157 acres. That the dwelling house was not on the tract of land called Saint Margaret's, but that Saint Margaret's, and the other tracts, composed and made but one plantation, and was occupied and possessed as one entire tract. That a warrant of escheat issued to affect the said land in the name of John Allen Thomas, who by his will duly executed, devised the same to the lessor of the plaintiff, who obtained a patent therefor prior to the commencement of this action for the said land, by the name of Chance.
