George Clay Gough of Union Co. born in the late 1800's. Moved to Fancy Farm KY to work and his descendents ended up in Ballard Co KY.

I looking for the family of George C Gough born abt 1879 in KY and married Blanche Higdon about 1905 probably at St Jerome in Fancy Farm. She was the dau of Charles Vitus Higdon and sister to Dr Arthur Robert Higdon. I'm looking for his parents

I had asked a friend of mine who lives in Owensboro to find some Higdon obits for me in the Mayfield Messenger, circa 1940 & 1948, mainly in the family of Charles Vitus Higdon who lived form some time in Daviess Co then moved and lived for many years in the Fancy Farm area. I research all MD to KY Higdons as I do Alvey. Charles V Higdon's daughter Blanche married George Clay Gough. Oddly this Gough family seemed to consistently spell their name Gaugh. At first I figured it was just a census error but everytime I ran into the name it was Gaugh. I have kept the traditional Gough spelling but it whenever I look for Gough I also look for Gaugh and Goff these days. For a long time I pronounced the name like Gow like in Cow but was told sometime ago that most pronounce it like Golf?? It's like Alvey, I often them in the O's becasue in MD adn in the south, the name is pronounced like ALL -V and it gets more like OLL - V is the twang gets too southern. Here in CA and in parts of KY (Louisville) where I lived before moving to CA, Alvey is pronounced Al -V

Charles' kids ended up in Ballard Co, Paducah, McCracken Co and in Fancy Farm, Graves Co. Most are buried in St Jerome.

Documentation from marriage and baptismal records show that George Benjamin Gough is the son of George Silas Gough.

Alice Gough and George Benjamin Gough received a dispensation for marriage from St Agnes Church in Uniontown because of the second cousin relationship

Illinois marriage records 1763 - 1900 show a marriage between George S Gough and Alice Gough in Gallatin County, IL on 11/24/1874 (Volume C, Page 40). Note the middle initial is "S" rather than the "B" of George Benjamin -a possible misinterpretation of handwriting mistaking an "S" for a "B".

George married Alice Frances Gough on 24 Nov 1874 in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois. Alice (daughter of Thomas Gough and Mary Emily Shanks) was born on 12 Dec 1854 in Uniontown, Union County, Kentucky; died on 12 May 1885. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Elizabeth Ann Gough's mother, Alice Gough, died when Elizabeth was five years old.

At Elizabeth's baptism on July 11, 1877, in St Agnes Church's Baptismal Records, page 18, Uniontown, Kentucky, her sponsor was Mary M. Alvey.

It should be noted that Alice has a brother named George and married a George Gough whom it appears from Family Tree Maker records is from another Gough family, that of George Silas Gough and Letitia Belle Davis. It appears that cousins have married.

The baptismal records at St. Agnes show Alice " Gough" as maiden name; invariably, the maiden name of the mother was recorded.
