Quite a mixup between Mills, Miles, Mannings.
Your listing of Mary Manning m Ignatius Mills is correct.

Ignatius married Mary Manning on 4 Nov 1781 in St. Mary's County, MD. Mary was born before 1758 in St. Mary's County, MD; died after 1827 in Washington County, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary Manning was born before 1758 in St. Mary's County, MD; died after 1827 in Washington County, Kentucky.

    Notes:

    Hi Betty,

I have two differing opinions on the parents of Mary Manning who married Ignatius Mills.

Sandy Caldwell states that Mary Manning, dau. of James Manning and Margaret Fenwick married Ignatius Mills on 11/4/1781 in St. Mary's Co. They moved to KY where Ignatius died before 11/26/1826 in Washington Co. He was born 11/16/1758 in SMC.

Colonial Settlers of St. Clement's Bay by Mary Louise Donnelly who statesthat Mary Manning, wife of Ignatius Mills, was the dau. of Cornelius Manning.

James Manning and Margaret Fenwick did have a daughter named Mary Manning, baptized 9/17/1765 at St. Andrew's Episcopal who was living at the time of her father's will:

Will of James Manning, SMC, planter 5/4/1768-6/18/1768. Son: William, 151ac. "Revell's" where I now live. Son: John, "Taunton Dean", 40 ac. and "Mark's Adventure", 36 ac. Daughter: Mary, negro girl Anastasia. Exec: Wife, Margaret, father-in-law, John Fenwick, and brother, John Manning. Wit: Ignatius Jarboe, Henry Wimsatt, carpenter and James Pike.

Cornelius Manning, Jr. (son of Cornelius Manning and first wife, Mary Wiseman) also had a daughter named Mary Manning, b. bef. 1757 by his first wife, Elizabeth Dansey (his second wife was Jane Ford).

Will of Cornelius Manning, SMC 8/2/1764-9/3/1764.
Son: John, negro Charles and his wife Monica and their two children Matthew and Prudence upon his returning to my estate Millie or Nacy which pleases him best. To pay debt son John owes Mr. Fisher and Mr. Theobold.
Son: John, 4 cows and calves.
Daughter: Ann Elizabeth Fenwick, 200 ac. bought of Raphael Taney; cows and calves.
Grandson: Cornelius Fenwick, negro girl Susanna.
Wife: Jane, 4 negroes named Joseph, Nell, James, and Shoemaker James.
Son: Robert, negroes Sall and her two children Stacey and Nan and Will, Basil, and Tom.
    Son: Robert, 1/5 of stock.
Children: Monica Manning, Francis Manning, and Mary Manning negroes Beck and her two children Betty and Mary Nell and child called Frank, Enoch, Raphael, Moses, and Barnaby.
Son-in-law: John Greenwell, a negro girl Rachel.
Wife: Jane, the plantation I now live on and after her death to be divided among my three children Monica, Frances, and Mary Manning.
Wife: Jane, land I bought of John Smith called "Nun's Oak" and remaining pt. of stock.
Exec: Wife, Jane. Wit: Peter Ford, Jr., William Williams, Mary Combs, Frances Williams.

SMC Beaverdam Manor by Donnelly who states that Mary Manning was the dau. of Jane Ford Greenwell and that she married Philip Greenwell and had no children. I disagree.

Jane Ford had two children by Cornelius Manning, Jr.: Monica Manning, baptized October 26, 1759 (m. William Fenwick) and Frances Manning, baptized January 10, 1762 (m. Henry Hill). Both girls baptized at St. Andrew's Epis.

Jane Ford, dau. of John Ford (d. 1765) m. first, Ignatius Greenwell, Jr. bef. 1745; second, Cornelius Manning, Jr., between 1757-1758; and third, _____Smith. She died as Jane Smith in 1804 leaving a will.

Will of Jane Smith, SMC, 7/14/1803-5/22/1804. Daughters: Monica Fenwick and Frances Hill, my land, equally divided. If one dies without heirs, the other to inherit; if both die without heirs to my grandsons, Enoch Fenwick and Athanasius Greenwell. Daughter: Frances Hill, my carriage and horse which I drive. To: The two following Reverend gentlemen (not named), 20 lbs. current money, equally divided. Granddaughter: Elizabeth Greenwell, 30 lbs. current money and one bed and furniture. Daughters: Monica Fenwick and Frances Hill, the residue of my estate. Execs.: Daughters, Monica Fenwick and Frances Hill. Wit.: Joseph Gough, Ignatius Peake, Catherine Greenwell.

I'm more inclined to believe that the Mary Manning who married Ignatius Mills was the daughter of Cornelius Mills, Jr. and Elizabeth Dansey only because she named a child Cornelius, but there's no confirming evidence.

Yes, I agree that Ignatius Mills was the son of Nicholas Mills III and Anastasia Gough. Yes, I also agree that Nicholas Mills III m. second, Winifred Van Reswick.

    We've already discussed Elizabeth Heard/Elizabeth Carberry/Margaret Read.

Mary Shercliffe, as stated before, married second, Thomas Dant--not John Dant.

The following addresses the parents of Peter Mills. I haven't done any research myself.

Mary Yoder: mayoder@davesworld.net, 12/11/2000 states that Nicholas Mills was b. 9/6/1599 in Bath, England. He m. Ann Longly 5/27/1632 at St. Janes, Clarkenwell, England.

    Linda Reno

Thanks for your reply. I have NO proved record of birth, death or marriage, only theories. Here are my notes summarized based on MD St. Mary's posts and my records:

Do you have any documentation as to who this Mary Manning was?

I have seen her birth year as listed 1762 with no support.
This IS close to Ignatius age (b 1758)

Thompson lists Mary Manning (ref 1052 in Thompson's book) as a daughter of Cornelius Manning

My grandfather's book names the date but that only has the transcript of an old bible record of the children. It does NOT name Mary as d/o Cornelius or list a place married.

If this is the same Mary as mentioned in Cornelius Manning II probated will 1764 then she would have been at least born after 1748 he wills her slaves (she WAS under sixteen).

Will Abstract of Cornelius Manning, SMC 8/2/1764-9/3/1764. Son: John, negro Charles andhis wife Monica and their two children Matthew and Prudence upon his returning to my estate Millie or Nacy which pleases him best. Wife: Jane, the plantation I now live on and after her death to be divided among my three "Monica Manning, Frances Manning, & Mary Manning as they severaly arrive to the age of sixteen years or day of marriage to them & Their heirs forever.". Wife: Jane, land I bought of John Smith called "Nun's Oak" and remaining pt. of stock. Exec: Wife, Jane. Wit: Peter Ford, Jr., William Williams, Mary Combs, Frances Williams.

The order of names may indicate that Mary MAY be younger than Monica and Frances. Making her born after Dec 1762. OR not a d/o Jane and born before Jan 1759 (see below)

    1. There was lengthy discussion on the board regarding Cornlelius Manning II.
    >From a descendent there was this proof of a first marriage:

Cornelius Manning, Jr. did not marry Jane Brooke. That marriage information is erroneous. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Dansey, 1737. I am a descendant of that marriage.
His second marriage was to Jane Ford in 1757/1758.
In a deposition, Cornelius Manning is judged for marrying Elizabeth Dansey for the property rights of "Broadneck." He had the property in 1737, so this is probably when he married her when she was 17 years of age.
Data on the Dansey family is from the Manning Papers, MS1233, Maryland Hall of Records, Annapolis, MD. This traces the ownership of "Radnor" and "Broad Neck" from John Dansey to his brother, Robert Dansey and eventually to his heir, Elizabeth.
    >From the above papers, it appears that in 1716, property known as "Radnor" and "Broadneck" was "devised" by John Dansey to his brother, Robert Dansey. After the death of Robert, John Shercliffe took possession of that part of the resurvey of "Radnor" claiming it as the heir at law of the original grantee of "Broad Neck" and conveyed the property in 1723 to a Samuel Boyd, who conveyed to Cummings, who conveyed to Cornelius Manning, Jr.
By 1737, it seems that it was resolved that the real owner of this property was Elizabeth Dansey, daughter of Robert Dansey. According to Mary Manning Combs, Cornelius was courting Elizabeth but no one thought that he would have her. A Robert Grason is reported to have sent for Cornelius and asked him if he intended to marry her or not. Grason told him if he did not marry her, someone else would and he would surely loose his land that he now holds under the right of Shercliffe for Elizabeth Dansey is the true heir to it, and with that Cornelius married in a short time to Elizabeth Dansey and she always understood that it was to secure his own land. From the same source comes a deposition of Elizabeth Peek, aged 74, circa 1775, "it was the common fireside talk of the neighbors that he, Cornelius Manning had married her only with a view of saving his land..."

    2. There was discussion of a second marriage:
"His second marriage was to Jane Ford in 1757/1758"
Was this range assumed based on birth of first child? I don't show a death date for Elizabeth or a record of name usage of "Jane Manning" to narrow this down.

Then Mary could not have been born until after Nov. 1762 (thus certainly mentioned in or near Parish Record of her sisters?)

Mary is NOT mentioned in will of Jane but possibly because she had already left for KY by 1792. Ignatius is paying taxes on the Rolling Fork by this date.

Where might the children have been born or baptised?
    from grandfather's book:

"James Mills Born 13 September 1782
    Aliavisa Mills " 11 March 1785
    Stephen Mills " 7 June 1787
    John H. Mills " 30 September 1789
    Cornelius Mills " 18 September 1791
    Nancy Mills " 1 March 1793
    Mary Mills " 20 July 1797
    Martha Mills " 15 September 1798
    Martin Mills " 14 September 1801
    Leo Mills " 22 June 1804
    Thomas Mills " 30 March 1808
The Mills pioneers to Kentucky settled in Holy Mary's parish. Ignatius Mills carried on the traditional occupation of farming. His life span was almost three score and ten, 1758-1827. He left a large estate in lands and slaves which he disposed of by will in 1827"

Has anyone ever seen this will? I will try to get it.

Linda Reno's musings in response to Sandy Caldwell's post regarding Donnelly's listing on p. 178 of the Colonial Settlers of St. Clements Bay book. Donally notes the parent of this Mary Manning as Cornelius:

"Note that Jane (Ford) Greenwell/Manning/Smith names only daughters Monica (Manning) Fenwick and Frances (Manning) Hill. She didn't name any of her Greenwell children, but then she apparently survived most, if not all of them.

    >>

Donnelly also stated that Mary Manning was the daughter of Jane Ford and thatshe m. Philip Greenwell and had no children. I can find no Philip Greenwell that fits the bill.

    >>

Donnelly stated that Ann Elizabeth Manning, sister of Mary, was also the daughter of Jane Ford. Well, that's a problem. She was having children by1763. Cornelius Manning didn't marry Jane Ford until 1757-1758 (Ignatius Greenwell didn't die until 1757)."

    3. There was discussion of this Mary:

Mary Manning, dau. of James Manning and Margaret Fenwick, was baptized at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on 9/17/1765.

    >>

Will of James Manning, SMC, planter 5/4/1768-6/18/1768. Son: William, 151 ac."Revell's" where I now live. Son: John, "Taunton Dean", 40 ac. and "Mark's Adventure", 36 ac. Daughter: Mary, negro girl Anastasia. Exec: Wife, Margaret, father-in-law, John Fenwick, and brother, John Manning. Wit: Ignatius Jarboe, Henry Wimsatt, carpenter and James Pike.

    >>

9/20/1768: Admin. accts. of James Manning, SMC. NOK: John Wiseman Greenwell and John Manning. Execs: Wife, John Fenwick, and John Manning.

    >>

8/13/1771: Admin. accts. of James Manning, SMC. Sureties: Ignatius Combs and Robert Fenwick. Legatee: daughter, Mary. Distribution to: widow, 1/3; residue
equally to: William, John, and Mary Manning; Execs., Philip Combs and his wife, Margaret Combs, John Fenwick and John Manning (Skinner).

--Sandy Caldwell posted that Mary Manning, dau. of James Manning and Margaret Fenwick married Ignatius Mills on 11/4/1781 in St. Mary's Co.

I only have the date from grandfather's bible record transcript NOT place or parents' source.

    4. Others are confusing the Cornelius' and Mary's. Cornelius I married Mary Wiseman thus becoming Mary Manning, and their daughter married John Mills thus becoming Mary Mills but this is all before 1760 so this adds to the confusion of citations elsewhere in the discussion of Ignatius Mills and Mary Manning of the next generation.

Any comments/ideas/suggestions? I guess finding that will might be the next source.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Nicholas Mills, III was born in 1735 in St. Mary's County, Maryland; died in 1785.

    Notes:

I have Winifred as the daughter of Thomas Van Reswick & Anne Wiseman, not Anne Carberry.

Which Nicholas Mills married Winifred Van Resnick on Oct. 15, 1775?

I have a Winifred Thomas marrying Nicholas Mills (1735-1785). If this is Winifred Van Resnick, then where did the "Thomas" come from? I have her parents as Mark Thomas & Winifred Abell.

Can anyone tell me who the siblings were for Winifred Van Resnick? Francine

You have the correct Nicholas Mills (1735-1785). He married first, Anastasia Gough between 1755 and 1757. Anastasia died in 1771. He married second, Winifred Van Reswick (who had been married first to Philip Greenwell who d. 1774) on 10/15/1775. All of the children of this Nicholas Mills were by Anastasia Gough--none by Winifred Van Reswick. Linda Reno

    Mark, you said:

"I have that Nicholas Mills IV, son of Nicholas Mills and Anastasia Gough, married Sarah Bickett on November 4, 1811 in Washington County, Ky."

Thank you, and I believe this was the same Sarah Bickett that also married Zachariah Riney 12 Feb 1824 Washington Co and was the daughter of William Bickett. Do you know who her mother was?

Did Nicholas IV, also marry a Mary Greenwell or is the record below incorrect?

    Name: Nicholas Mills
    Spouse: Mary Greenwell
Birth Place: St Mary S Count, MD
    Birth Date: 9 March 1769
    Parents: Nicholas Mills , Anastasia

No, Stephen Gough b. 1742 wasn't Anastasia's brother. He was the son of James Gough, Jr. and Priscilla Heard, but she and Stephen were first cousins since Anastasia's father, Stephen Gough and Stephen's father, James Gough, Jr. were brothers and the sons of James Gough (d. 1725).

The marriage of date for Nicholas Mills to Winifred, widow of Philip Greenwell is an exact date. From Fresco: "Nicholas Mills m. Winifred, widow of Philip Greenwell, 15 October 1775. Nicholas d. 1785, age 50 and Winifred was age 49. Ref, Chancery Po. 26:184, 185, 191." She also cites her sources as "Hodges' Card File" at MSA and "The Greenwell Family" by Charles and Laverne Fenwick.

*** According to Colonial Settlers Nicholas married first Anastasia _____ and second Winifred Thomas, widow of Phillip Greenwell. He died at age 50 placing his birthdate in 1735. His children's names and birthdates were taken from church records.

Stephen Gough had inherited "Gough's Levels" from his father, James Gough (d. 1725) and devised this property to his son, Ignatius in his 1743 will along with "Gough's Conveniency". The last record I have of Ignatius is 1745, so I would guess that he died and Anastasia inherited the land. Nicholas Mills in his 1785 will devised these two pieces of property, previously owned by Stephen Gough, to his son, Ignatius Mills: "Gough's Level," 42 acres; "Gough's Conveniency," 48 acres.

Linda Reno
