During WWII the family moved to Bremerton and her parents worked in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Upon graduating from High School in June 1945, Arlene joined her father and mother in the Shipyard working in the Radar Shop where she met her husband that also worked there. Arlene was a loving mother who spent hours with the girls Camping, Hiking and Painting. Both girls benefited from having an engineer for a father and an artist for a mother and combined the skills to become talented jewelry makers. Arlene had a natural talent for drawing and when they moved to Knoxville in 1946 for Ed to complete his Engineering Degree, she enrolled in the University to study Art. She was one of the first students in the new art classes that Mr. Kermit Ewing started after the end of WWII. Classes were held in a two-story house located where the Law School is now. She had continued to participate In watercolor activities in Knoxville since that time. She earned Artist Member status in the Tennessee Water Color Society in which she was an active member. She was also a member of The Knoxville Water Color Society and served as Secretary and President. Arlene taught painting and drawing for many years at the YWCA, Rechenbachs, The Dulin Gallery of Art and at her home. She won numerous prizes and awards for her work and owners of her paintings are widely spread. She was a long time member of TVUUC and in her early years served as a teacher in the church school. In later years she was active member of the TVUUC Art Committee and a member and Secretary of the Women's Alliance. A memorial service will be conducted at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike at 5 PM on Tuesday Nov. 18. A reception will follow.
