    • Mrs. Olive Murtey Laid to Rest at Her Old Home

Mrs. Olive H. Murtey died at the Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Monday morning Aug. 22 at 1:15 a. m. She was the widow of Thomas Murtey, who for thirty-five years was cashier of the First National Bank of Weeping Water, Nebraska. He preceded her in death June 6, 1926.

Mrs. Olive H. Murtey was born Jan. 12, 1871 at Marysville, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Hill. Shortly after that her family moved to Stockton, Kansas, where she lived until her marriage to Thomas Murtey, who also was raised in Stockton, Kansas. To this union were born four children, two of whom died in infancy, a son, Edwin, and one of the twin daughters, Margaret. A daughter, Mrs. Dorothy M. Faulkner, an interior decorator, resides at Wilmington, Delaware. The oldest daughter, Mabel (Mrs. L. O. Stoker), lives at Shelby, Iowa. Two grandchildren, Mrs. Carl E. Paden (Ann Stoker), lives at Henryetta, Oklahoma and Thomas M. Stoker, a Navy war veteran and one of the survivors of the aircraft carrier Franklin during the war is a college student.

One brother, Dr. Elmer Hill, a physician and surgeon, resides in Walla Walla, Washington.

Mrs. Murtey was raised in the Christian Church and upon her marriage united with the Congregational Church of Weeping Water.

She was always a homemaker and church worker, well read and interested in the events of the times. She put up a brave and cheerful fight to conquer her illness of cancer and for a while was improved, but a turn for the worse came.

Mrs. Murtey enjoyed her work as a news writer for the Plattsmouth Journal and had hoped until the very last to be able to continue it.

Services were held at the Congregational Church at Weeping Water with Rev. John C. Pryor conducting the services and paying tribute to the long and useful life of this splendid woman, in the community where she resided so long and whose life was intertwined with the old friends and the city that she loved as home.

During the service Mrs. Carl E. Day, long time friend, played a number of the old hymns at the pipe organ that had been beloved by the departed during her lifetime.

The burial was at Oakwood Cemetery with old friends serving as the pallbearers: O. C. Hinds, C. J. Elgaard, C. H. Gibson, Bert Philpot, Henry Urish and DeForest Philpot.
      > Mike:
      > Surprise, surprise. This makes me related to both you and your wife. I should have looked at my ancestry chart before sending the email. I did have the information that I descend from Stephen Gough via his daughter Mary Gough that married John Miles II (although I did not have Mary Tattershall as the wife of Stephen Gough). I would be glad to exchange any information but I have not computerized all of mine yet. I have been working on a book project for my Paden line and that is all I have on the computer.
      >
      > My Thomas Hill came from Wiltshire to Maryland as did many of the Catholic settlers there. There must have been numerous Catholics in Wiltshire but I know very little of that aspect of English history.
      >
      > My relationship to both you and your wife would come together with the marriage of my gr. grandparents, Thomas Murtey and Nancy Olive Hill on 5 Oct 1892 in Stockton, KS.
      >
      > * Thomas Murtey b. 11 March 1864 in Lincoln, IL; d. 6 June 1926 in Weeping Water, NE. Son of James Murtey (Sr.) b. 18 May 1825 County Sligo, Ireland; d. 1905 Rooks Co., KS and Elizabeth Slattery b. County Sligo, Ireland 1831; d. 29 Mar 1894 Rooks Co., KS. Thomas Murtey was the brother of James Murtey, Jr., the gr. grandfather of your wife. That would make your wife and I third cousins.
      > * Nancy Olive Hill b. 12 Jan 1871 in Marysville, IA; d. 22 Aug 1949 Council Bluffs, IA. Her descent from the Goughs of MD would be as follows (beginning with her father):
      >
      > 1. Benjamin Hill b. 31 March 1842, Warrenton MO. m. Sarah Jane Cross 13 Jun 1867; d. 9 Dec 1910 Huntsville, WA.
      > 2. Charles Hill II b. 3 Feb 1803, Nelson Co., KY; m. 8 Nov 1838 (2nd marriage) Nancy Spilman; d. 3 Jul 1869.
      > 3. Charles Hill I b. 1761, St. Marys Co., MD. m. Margaret Nichols; d. 5 Mar 1846, Nelson Co., KY.
      > 4. Thomas Hill b. 1 May 1723, Wiltshire, England; m. Rebecca Miles 13 Nov 1753; d. 23 May 1820, Washington Co., KY. Rebecca Miles b. abt. 1736 St. Marys Co., MD; d. 18 Mar 1783 Montgomery Co., MD. Rebecca Miles line to the Goughs is as follows:
      > 5. John Miles III m. Elizabeth Gardiner.
      > 6. John Miles II m. Mary Gough (next is her line)
      > 7. Stephen Gough m. ?
      > 8. William Gough ?
      >
      > Am I correct in assuming that you are a descendant of Stephen Gough? Anyway it is a small world filled with coincidences. I never cease to be amazed at what one finds with genealogy. I really enjoy the historical aspects and have learned a great deal about a multitude of subjects.
      > Mark

The next two photos are of the footstones of Henry and James and she wrote on the backs of the photos: "Henry Hill, buried at Stockton, Kansas. James Hill, James and Henry were brothers". She must have gotten confused or something as Thomas Murtey had married Olive Hill but her family later moved away from Stockton to Washington State and there were no brothers James and Henry Hill.
