COALDALE MAN NEAR DEATH RESULT OF STABBING AFFRAY

Will Davenport, of Coaldale, Arkansas, is in a critical condition and J. M. Moorman, also of Coaldale, is in the county jail at Poteau as the result of a quarrel at a revival meeting near Coaldale, Saturday evening, in which Davenport received several bad wounds from a knife in the hands of Moorman.

Davenport was cut in the back, beneath the shoulder blade in the chest, the wound reaching the chest cavity but not penetrating his lungs, also in the abdomen, which was the most serious wound.

He was brought to Heavener and local doctors sewed him up but we were told he was in a very serious condition and will be very fortunate if he survives his wounds. According to eye witnesses the trouble came up when Davenport was asked to join the church. He replied in a rather uncomplimentary manner to the minister, also to Moorman, which caused the trouble between the two men.

Charges against Moorman will probably not be filed until it is determined whether or not Davenport will recover."

DAVENPORT DIES AS RESULT OF KNIFE WOUNDS

Will Davenport, who was wounded in a religious argument at a country church near Coaldale, Arkansas, on Saturday night, July 8th, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Woodson here in Heavener early Saturday morning.

      J. M. Moorman, accused of doing the killing, is in the county jail and will probably have charges filed against him this week.

Davenport was stabbed in the abdomen, the chest, the hip and in the back, just under the shoulder blade. The abdominal wound was the most serious, however, and we understand was the one that proved fatal, infection setting up which the doctors could not handle.

Witnesses to the fight told officials that the argument came up at a revival being held near Coaldale and we were told that the men, who were friends prior to the trouble, had gone to the meeting together."

MOORMAN BOUND OVER ON MURDER CHARGE

The preliminary hearing of J. M. Moorman, accused of inflicting fatal knife wounds in a quarrel with Will Davenport at a rural school house near the Arkansas line, drew a large crowd here last Friday afternoon. In fact, so many people attended the affair that it was moved to the city auditorium in order to accommodate those who wished to hear it.

The hearing last about an hour and Judge Johnston bound the defendant over on a charge of murder. The district court will fix the amount of bail later.

Only three witnesses were used, all of them state witnesses. They were Ben Huckaby, Grady Simmons and Dr. J. H. Harvey.

Huckaby testified to the cause leading up to the quarrel in which Moorman was accused of killing a yearling calf by Davenport. The two men then started pushing one another, according to the witness, and Davenport then knocked Moorman to his knees. At that stage of the quarrel, Huckaby stated that he turned his back on the two men and did not witness the actual knifing of Davenport.

Grady Simmons stated that he did not see the beginning of the fight, but turned to look at the two men when he heard the first blow struck. When he first saw them, Moorman was making an attempt to strike Davenport while Davenport was holding him off. He stated that Davenport finally knocked Moorman down, but did not attack him while he was down.

Dr. Harvey stated that he was called to examine Davenport and later helped to dress his wounds. He said that the wounded man had a severe cut in his lower abdomen, also one in the chest, one in the hip and two in the back. He also stated that in his opinion the knife wounds caused Davenport's death."
