    • Decatur - Martha D. Pulliam, 66, of Decatur, passed away at 5:25 am Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
      Services to celebrate Martha’s life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Graceland/Fairlawn Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Spruell officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Maroa Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Decatur Genealogical Society.       Martha was born on July 17, 1942 in Paducah, Kentucky, the daughter of John and Alice (Dunn) Dever. She married James Pulliam on April 24, 1970 in Tuscola. Martha was reared in Massac County in Southern Illinois. She holds a degree in English and History. Her graduate work was in constitution law. She spent most of her career working for Illinois Bell Telephone Company and for AT&T. She retired from AT&T corporate headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey .
      Following her retirement, she continued to pursue an interest in genealogy which began in junior high school with a class project. She was an active member of several genealogical societies, historical societies, and family associations, including the Decatur Genealogy Society, the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois, the Tennessee Genealogy Society, the Kentucky Historical Society, and the Shirk family Association. She served as the president and quarterly editor for the Decatur Genealogical Society. She was an active volunteer in the Decatur Society’s Library. Martha had served the Illinois State Genealogical Society as Honors and Awards chairman and as director. She joined Stephen Decatur Chapter NSDAR in 2005 and was serving as corresponding secretary.
      She leaves behind her husband James, two cousins: Caroline (Arch) Wallbright of Metropolis, and Dempsy Dever, two sisters-in-law Wanda Polk of Savoy and Wilma (Dean) Fever of El Paso, Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.
