I think that the father of my Elizabeth Brothers is John Brothers. I have his dates as 1766-1832, born in Maryland. Not sure of the sources right now. His wife seems to be Dorothty who died about the same time as John. A Cornelius and Thomas Brothers also died in the 1830's in Union Kentucky. These last two were born 1790's to 1800?

Bob Alvey says she was Elizabeth Brothers. "Per my records which are not air tight, I show that Elizabeth Brothers, daughter of John Brothers married James Walker on April 14, 1814 in Washington Co, KY per Washington Co marriage records, I gathered he died but do not know for sure, then Elizabeth Brothers Walker, probably widow of James Walker married Joseph Gough. I don't have copies of the original marriage bond, return or consent for either of the marriages of Elizabeth Brothers but the abstracts I do have mention that her marriage to Joseph Gough was with the consent of John Brothers but no mention of guardian. Since Elizabeth would have been about 26 at the time of her wedding to Joseph Gough per 1850 Union Co, KY census by the time she married Joseph Gough, she would not have needed consent of a guardian to marry. If anyone of this e-mail exchange has either the Washington Co, KY wills or possibly the Washington Co, KY tax lists to see if a James Walker is listed in years after 1819, that might be an added piece of information."

John Goldsmith Gough was born in Union Ky. His death certificate from 1913 gives his mother's name as Elizabeth Brothers.

      Mike,

Your outline chart is very interesting and I have a number of differences but want to check out my sources before getting back to you.

The Brothers family does mingle with the Goughs at other points. For example you show that Charles Jerome Gough (I show him as Charles Joseph Gough but will check that) married Minerva Anna Brothers (I show here as Ann Minerva Gough and will check) But Ann Minerva or Minerva Anna Brothers is the daughter of Thomas S Brothers and Mary Pike. Thomas S Brothers is the brother to Elizabeth Brothers who married Joseph Gough. There is at least one more brother Joseph Hiram Brothers who married Ann "Nancy" Alvey.

From the chart below it looks like you are using FTM and do not have a marraige date for Thomas Gough and Martha Ann Shanks. Without a marriage date, it does not show them as married and shows Mary Emily Shanks as Thomas Gough's first wife. I show Martha Ann Shanks as having married Thomas abt 1843, a date that precedes the birth of John and Francis. I really have no idea if they ever really married but I find most people of that era did so especially in the Catholic communities.

I live in Laguna Niguel, CA which is about half way between LA and San Diego along the coast but was born in Louisville. My family moved to CA when I was very young but still have many cousins still in the Louisville and Elizabethtown areas.
      Bob Alvey

For some reason I had July 1793?? My source says 1850 Union Co, KY census but we both know the 1850 census did not give months but she was listed as age 57 in that census so that is where I got the 1793, I always try to use the date from the earliest known source. If I ever find my source for July I'll let you know. but while checking this morning to confirm or deny the 1790 per 1811 date (1811 has to be wrong, much too late since she married for the first time in 1814 (actually 1793 would be pretty young for that marriage too!!!!) In the 1860 census, she is 70; 1870, 80; 1880 90. I am changing to 1790 and even that seems young for a April 17, 1814 marriage date to James Walker but I am going with that, see chart below.

Elizabeth Brothers (Walker) Gough named her son John Goldsmith Gough for a reason. Elizabeth ______, wife of Cornelius Brothers, was a Goldsmith or her mother was. I haven't quite pinned her down yet, but she's also related to several other women we've discussed over the past several days, e.g., Sarah, wife of Walter Davis and Susanna Goldsmith who married first, Joseph Shanks and second, William Brewer. Susanna (Goldsmith) Brewer is the one who died in Washington Co., KY in 1814.

Elizabeth Brothers is named again in the document below. James Goldsmith, parents not known at this point, but his father was a Goldsmith and his mother was a Mason. James Goldsmith was the brother of Susanna (Goldsmith) Shanks/Brewer.

11/28/1785: Admin. accts. of James Goldsmith by Clement Gardiner, Admin. Distribution: John Gardiner; Clement Gardiner; William Gardiner; Susanna Melton; Mary Reeves; Mary Ann Leake; Elizabeth Bailey; John Goldsmith; Elizabeth Brothers; Abagail Jordan; Sarah Davis; Mary Bond; Susanna Brewer; Rebecca Goldsmith; John Roberts' heirs. (Balances and Distributions, Chr. of SM, Summer 1993).

Apparently when John Roberts, one of the legatees under the will of John Mason (see will above), died all hell broke loose.

3/17/1782: Ordered that letters of administration pendente lite be granted by the Reg. of Wills to Susanna Mason on the estate of John Roberts, dec'd. (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick). (Administration pendente lite, where there is a dispute as to the person entitled to probate or a general grant of letters the court appoints an administrator till the question has been decided).

6/1782: Susanna Roberts vs. Anthony Roberts. Libel respondents witnesses: Raphael Ford, Cornelius Brothers, Mary M. Goldsmith, Joseph Walker, James Mills, John Riney, Mary Roberts, Edward Campbell, Peter Howard, Henrietta Hoult, John Botlick, John Baptist Howard, Walter Davis, Sarah Davis, Elizabeth Hoult, John Carpenter, Elizabeth Nivison. Libellants witnesses: John B. Graves, John Hazle, John A. Thomas, John Lucas, John Ireland, Edmund Campbell, Joseph Hargus, Raphael Thompson, Ann Manger, Jeremiah Edwards, Susanna Mason, Robert Thompson, Philip Ford, Jesse Barron, Joseph Walker. The court adjudges that the paper produced by the respondent is not to be received as the last will and testament of John Roberts and ordered letters of administration be granted to the libellant. The respondent appeals to the General Court of the western shore. (Orphan Ct. Rec., Fenwick).

I don't have a copy of this case, but will be contacting the Maryland State Archives to see if they have it. I've already checked with the Register of Wills for St. Mary's County and they don't. Hopefully the papers surrounding the case still exist and will tell us the relationships of the people involved.

I already know who most of these people were, but am not going to list them at this point so this email won't be so long. I will, if there is enough interest.
