Is this Sarajain CARPENTER DAVENPORT's grandson? Is her son Stephen Robert or Robert Stephen?

I have a death date of 15 Jul 1950 for William J. DAVENPORT. Guess I've messed something up.
If you did I did too. I had the 1950 date for him but don't know where I found it. I emailed Barbara but she hasn't answered yet. Will let you know as sooon as I know.

Is her son Stephen Robert or Robert Stephen?
I am not sure but in the bible record below he is Stephen Robert Davenport but it depends on who you are talking to. My mother in law calls him Stephen Robert. I have changed it so many times my computer thinks I am crazy. (which I am)

      Note from Faith Taylor

So much good info. It will take me a little time to get my head around all of it. I was in touch with Glenda Brothers some years ago. I think we connected through one of the Scott Co. AR genealogy sites.

From her, I learned of Hartzell Sherrill, long story on how we connect, but he is still living in Wharton TX, just an hour or so from me. We met while his wife was living and had an enjoyable visit. He has a sharp mind, computer savvy and he is in his 90s! I stay in touch with him on FB.

Anyway, back to the Davenports, have you read the letter that was written by Samantha Davenport? I will copy you on what I have typed up so far. Ervie Moss and I stayed in touch for a couple of years before she died.

I know I'm rambling and this letter probably has a lot more info than you wish but here it is:

Given to me by Ervie Moss.
Robert Davenport was born in Tennessee. Mary Ann Davenport was born in Sharp County (AR). Her parents were Nancy Jan Rust (nee Watson) and William Rust, farm people. Robert Davenport's father died when he was about three years old. His mother married three times; first, Davenport; second, Robinson; third, Fry. She had two children by Davenport, Robert first, and Mary, who married Taylor Ring. At least 20 years after Robert Davenport came to Scott County (AR), his sister and family came here and stayed about two years, then went back to Sharp County.

Robert Davenport's mother lived in Tennessee, then in Sharp County. They came to Scott County after Robert Davenport came. They lived at Dutch Creek a few years, then to Pilot for about 15 years, then to Weeks and lived there until she died. She is buried at Weeks. She died about 20 years ago. By Robinson she had two children, Lee Terry (Mrs. Bill Green Terry) and Tom F. Robinson. Lee Terry had Willie (who married Charley Kersey and lives at Weeks), Nora, Jim (the oldest). John, George, and Tommy who died at an early age.

Nora married Oscar Fuller's brother and lives in Oklahoma City. Jim lives in California. John was married twice and both wives died. Aunt Lee has four of his children. His children were Ester by first week (married and lives in Texas) and Lonnie (married and lives in Oklahoma).

Tom Robinson married Nannie Ashmore, Judge Ashmore's daughter and they had Bessie (married and lives in Oklahoma) Emma (lives at Weeks) Jim (lives in Texas) Mae (married and lives in Oklahoma).

Grandma Fry married Robinson in Sharp County and Fry in Sharp County. Pa was seven or eight when Grandma Fry married Robinson. Grandma Rust died 25 years ago in January.

Mary Ann and Robert Davenport's children were:
Martha Jane married Keat Meeks, had seven children, three living, Jake, Ovie and Amos. Jack married; Ovie married Jim Sherrill and has three boys, Hartsell and two others.
Samantha Elizabeth (Sissie) born March 4, 1877 in Sharp County near Evening Shade: married James Berry Cox in 1895: died August 17, 1943. Their children were Emmett Hatfield, James Elmo, Maitlana, James Robert and Ola Mae (twins), Lettie Marie, Mary Ann, Floyd, George Tipton, Bessie Lee, and J.B.
Tom Married Ella Harrison, had two boys, Argus and Buster. Tom died 25 years ago. Ella married a Thomas who is dead now.
Rozella (Dollie) married Joe Terry, son of George, had seven children: Ambrose, Beulah, Mittie, Albert, Alfred, Edna, and Artie.
Tennie Bell (Piggie) married Oscar Fuller. They lived at Hodgens, Oklahoma where they ran a store. Their children were Vester, Everett, Eli, Ethel, Delphia Marie, and two other girls.
Nellie (was a twin but her twin was born dead) married Jim Brothers, had two children: Ervie married Jimmy Moss: Odie married a Week's girl.
Willie married Melissa Buckner and had children.
Johnny married Odie Brothers and had children.
Molly married Frank Stevens and had one boy, Junior.
Jimmy married had Willa Mae; his first wife died and he married Minnie Brixley and had children.
Earl was baby of the family.
Tom Watson, Levi's daddy was a brother of G. Grandmother Rust. Aunt Sis Scott was a sister of G. Grandmother Rust. Tom, John, Levi and Eli (twins) were sons of Tom. Aunt Susan was Uncle John's wife. Martha Jane was Uncle John's daughter. Tiny Dunlap was her daughter. Chris Johnson was Martha Jane's husband. Willie Watson was the brother of Martha Jane.

Faith, Ask, and ye shall receive. I applaud you for taking a look at everything before you make a determination. Here are my notes from Ginny Lee, Glenda Brothers & Helen Carpenter Godwin. Ginny is a direct female descendant from Sarajain. Glenda connects through the TERRYs. Helen descends from Sarajain's brother Edmund. Helen & I are in contact now since she's working on some DNA connections with CARPENTER. She's just uploading to gedmatch so she doesn't yet have a kit #. I shared hers with you and have copied her on this note. As you can tell from her notes below, she's a careful researcher and been at this a long time. Ginny and I are still Facebook friends but I haven't talked to Glenda for a long time.

Robert is with his mother in 1870 Sharp Co., AR. Supposedly the Bible transcript has the correct birthdate for Robert so that ties him to the Robert & Matilda CARPENTER family. I put things in red so you could easily find them.

BARLOW/GOFF is a whole nother story. Best saved for another day, but Edmond mentioned below is a BARLOW/GOFF. I just discovered this connection when I looked at your DNA report & still need to do some digging.

      Hi Everyone!!

Maybe this will take our minds off the bickering. Frown, Frown,

This is my first time on this list but have been following it for some time now. You are a great group!!!

If anyone finds a connection to Robert Stephen Davenport there is a great picture of him and his family on the Scott co. Ark Gen web site.

the following is a puzzle to me but I have put the pieces together the best I can. Can anyone add or subtract, or give me a clue about it?

THIS IS A BIBLE RECORD FOUND IN A PERIODICAL OF SHARP CO ARK (USED TO BE

      NOTES:

      1. The earliest record of Robert Carpenter found by this researcher is in the 1840 census for Henderson Co. Ten, where he appears as head of a household consistant with the above bible record. He is also listed in the 1850 census in henderson Co. with his wife Matilda and all of the children
appearing on the seconc page of the bible record. Only one book of land record survived the Sivil war days in Henderson co. it contains a record where Robert Carpenter sold 250 acres of land to Edmond Gawf; withnessed John a Criner and Elias Goff. This deed is dated 8 Oct 1851 and recorded 8
Jan 1856. Adjoining property owneres wer Stephen Hefley, Jackson Petty, Daniel Mayberry, EdmonGawfs, and James Long. I believe Robert Carpenter was running a store at the time of the 1840 census as his occupation was categorized as "trade or Manufacturing". Evidently he left Henderson
County after 1851 and before 1865. By the beginning of the Civil War the entire family had settled at Maxville in Lowrence (now Sharp )Co. Ark. Where theyand many of their descendants remained.

      2. Thomas M. Carpenter md Rebecca Clements by whome he had one son, Francis M. Carpenter b. July 1862. 1st Lt. Thomas M. Carpenter, 21 st ark Infantry died 19 June 1863. He had been amoung the wounded left at Corinth the preceeding winter, was captured and imprisoned at Iuka, Miss.

      3. On some record Sarah appears as Sarah A. It is not known what became of her. ( Glenda's Note: see note 10 and the following 1870 census where Sarah A ROBISON is listed with Mary and Robert in Sharp Co. Ark. I think they might be one and the same don't you Faith?)

      4. James Harden Carpenter with wife Eliza are listed in Sharp County, Ark. in 1870. Then removed to Childress, Texas.

      5. Rodise Carpenter married James DEAVENPORT. In 1860 they were living in Ash Flat, Arkansas, and James was teaching school. At that time they had a one year old son Charles H. Deavenport. Later children were Dani Mary, and James. Rodise was widowed by 1880

      6. Edmon Carpenter married Mary Debbie McCord Campbell, d/o Joseph m. McCord of Maxville. Their children were Joseph Robert, Nancy M., Isabell, James F. Horatio, Clarenda A., Filmore, and perhaps others. Most of the Carpenters in the south part of Sharp County descend from this family.

      7. Martha Jane probably md. a Shirley and is the mother of John Clayton Shirley of the bible record. If so, she must have died soon after his birth as he would not otherwise have been raised by his grandparents.

      8. Mary Carpenter md. a Mr. Anderson from Poukeepsie, Arkansas. After his death she mad the home with her nephew Joseph Robert in Cave City where she lived for many years known affectionately as Aunt Mary. She buried as Aunt Mary in the cemetery at Maxville beside her brother Edmond.

      9. The only known record of Henry Carpenter is in this bible and the 1850 census

      10. This and the following two entries are evidently grandchildren who Robert elected to enter in his bible. Other grandchildren are not entered. Mary Jane DEVENPROT May have been a daughter of Rodise (who would have been 15 years, 2 mo old at the time of birth). Otherwise, she must be the
daughter of Sarah which is entirely possible.( GLENDA'S NOTE: This is what I believe)

      11. As this entry is immediately following Mary Jane DEVENPORT and at the time would have been on a page with on other entries, this researcher concludes that the full name shoud be STEPEN ROBERT DEVENPORT. In any event, no record of either child has been found outside of the bible. (GLENDA'S NOTE: With the exact same birthday also, I believe this is our Robert Stephen DAVENPORT)

      12. All entries up to this point have ben in the same hand writing, evidently that of Robert Carpenter, and in the old-fasioned style know as "round". This entry is in the beautiful Spencerian style used by both Thomas and Edmond Carpenter. James Clayton Shirley was raised by his Carpenter grandparents.

Thank you for the information. I am trying to go back to where I found Robert Stephen with Sara (Sarajain). I seem to only find him as far back as 1900 which isn't a lot of help. I still have notes and census to look at.

I agree with you though, if William S was in TN and having children with Mary Hatfield he most likely is not the father of RS. It gets so confusing sometimes.

I am looking forward to using GEDMATCH to find a DNA match. I did find a DNA donor in the line of Matilda Goff. Of course I don't share any DNA with her. If it helps you the number is A450032. There is so much one can do with GEDMATCH and I've barely touched the surface.
