Fortney, female, born August 2, 1890, Lyon District, parents: David H. and Laura Fortney, reported by the mother in 1890.' The reference to 'Laura' rather than Lucinda appears to be an error on the part of the assessor.

      Signed statement of David H. Fortney dated February 3, 1898 in his Civil War pension file located in the National Archives lists his children and their birthdates and states that Meril Fortny was born August 2 1890.

    • Merle Fortney attended Tunnelton High School. In 1924, she and her husband and children moved to Morgantown, WV. Her mother, Lucinda Pyles lived with them until her death in 1931. In 1940, she and her family moved to an apartment on Dorsey Avenue, living there until 1976. In November 1976, she suffered a pinched sciatic nerve in her leg and never walked again. She lived with the family of her son, Ross Goff, for a time before moving to Morgantown Nursing Center. In early 1977, she moved to Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown. Finally, in February 1978, she moved to Hopemont State Hospital in Terra Alta, WV.
