  • Notes
    • Michael Cunningham, the leading farmer of Barr Township, Daviess Co., Ind., is a native of the "Emerald Isle", where he was born in 1814,or 1815. He is a son of B. and Margaret (Coyle) Cunningham. His mother died in 1820, leaving two children, him and a sister, about two years younger than himself. His father died in 1830, and he and his sister lived for some time with their mother's brother. At the age of sixteen he began working for himself, receiving the munificent sum of $5. a year for his services. By 1836, he and his sister had saved enough money to enable them to take passage for the United States. They emabarked on the ship "Southerner", and landed in New York, with less than $5. in money between them. They soon obtained work, and Mr. Cunningham began digging cellars, and by his faithfullness and energy won the respect and approbation of his employers. From NewYork, he worked his way to Providence, R.I., and for several months worked for the railroad. He then returned to NewYork, and carried the hod for 75 cents per day; but in a few weeks, he and his sister, embarked on board the ship "Havre", for Mobile, Alabama, and reached that city when the yellow fever was raging. He succeeded in obtaining enployment, and in 1838 took a trip up the Mississippi, and going as far northward as Chicago. He then worked on the river at Louisville, Kentucky for some time, and for about seven years worked on the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers. In 1840, he came to Daviess Co.,Ind., to visit friends, who prevailed upon him to invest some of his money in land. He purchased a 160 acres of timber land, which he rented. He then returned to the river, but visited his farm every year and added improvements. In 1843, he moved on his place, where he kept house for himself for some time. That same year he married Julianna Shircliff, born in 1826, daughter of John and Mary (Gough) Shircliff. Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham became the parents of these children: Mary, Patrick, Andrew, Aliza, Louis, Michael, John, and Joseph. Michael is one of the rising young teachers of the county, and the rest of the boys are farmers. All the family are members of the Catholic Church, and Mr. Cunningham is a Democrat in politics, although he votes for the man rather than the party. He has been quite a successful business man and is one of the first taxpayers of the county.

Does anyone know if Ignatius Goff/Gough is the brother of Mary Gough Shircliffe?

Thomas Shircliffe living next door to John Shercliffe is too young to be thebrother of John; besides his brother Thomas died in Meade Co, KY.

Now I wonder if this Thomas is a son of John and Mary Shircliffe?

I have a copy of the "Southerner" passenger list now that shows Michael and his sister, previously unnamed for me!

For anyone interested she is Catherine Cunningham. Does anyone have any further info on her??? The Bio notes she went with Michael to Mobile AL on board the "Havre" which I have been unsuccessful in locating.

Just thought I'd share with ya'll.

      Yes, Mike,

I found a website that was able to find and send me a copy of the Southerner's passenger list which clearly shows Catherine Cunningham and Michael.

Still unsuccessful locating a passenger list for the "Havre" as mentioned in the bio. At this point Mobile, AL is the last place I have Catherine. Does anyone have further info on her, or, is this the first we all knew her name?

I'm guessing born about 1817 per the bio, no ages on the list. I'm also guessing Margaret Coyle, her mom was b. abt 1795. Also, can't remember how, but I saw something that indicates the B. is Bernard and Michael was born in Athlone, Roscommon, Ireland. Working to find Bernard and/or Margaret.

Yes. Michael and Julianna Shircliff are my gg-grandparents, their son Andrew James and Mary Adeline Padgett are my great-grandparents.

You have most of it right but some errors.

Mary E. Cunningham married Owen Cavanaugh 11 Apr 1864, they had 10 children.

I can tell you Patrick Joseph was married at least 3 times and I had heard family stories it was more like 5 times. Laura is Laura Ann Padgett married him 09 Jan 1872 in Martin Co. He married Catherine M. Madden 07 May 1901 also in Martin Co. I had a note to investigate Margaret Coran. I did find a Daviess Co. rec 07 Jan 1864 where she is transcribed as Margaret Horan, but wasn't sure.

Elizabeth Ann was known as Lydia died 30 Apr 1933 in Martin Co. She and Thomas Addison Seal had 7 children that I know of. (Thomas was Andrew's wife Adeline Padgett's uncle)

Louis F. Cunningham was b. 23 Jan 1857 Martin Co. IN and d. 25 May 1902 in Loogootee. He was murdered during a bar fight. Married Maude M. Parks 03 Jan 1900 and only had one daughter Doris Marie. Never heard of Sarah Carter?? I've been told he also married Mary Alice Brown, but I think that too is a different Louis Cunningham as I believe she had children and I know Doris was Louis' only child. Doris was only 1 or 2 when she lost both parents. She first went to live with her aunt Mary and Owen Cavanaugh after Louis died and Mary died 1910 when Doris was only 9. My aunts and uncles were very close to her.

Michael Bernard was born Aug 1859, married Margaret "Maggie" Kennedy 27 Spe 1887. They had one daughter Mary Beatrice. I still haven't been able to find his death rec.

John A. was b. Aug 1861 and married Anna Mary Livers 10 Oct 1882 and had 10 children. Don't know who John M. and Margaret Myers are but not this family.

Finally Francis "Frank" Joseph b. Mar 1966 d. 07 Sep 1921 on the family farm near Loogootee. He married first Frances Hopkins 07 Oct 1890 and had 4 children Marie Rose, Joseph Bernard, Carl and Eugenia. After Frances died he married Catherine Effa Smith 26 Apr 1902 and they had 4 children Glenn, Ralph, Catherine and George Francis.

Frank and Frances son, known as Bernard and/or J. B., published a family history in Urbana, Champaign, IL where he was a professor. He recalled his grandmother Julianna Shircliff living with them when he was growing up. My granmother was very close to most of her cousins and my dad and J.B. knew each other and I have some photos of many of them.

I have lots more if you're interested
