    • Crossing the Dark River; Henderson County, Tennessee, Obituaries; 1827-1950 p. 342-3 MILAM, Berth Johnson (The Lexington Progress, August 11, 1933) Tragic Death by Drowning: Mrs. A. L. Milam, daughter of Thomas Henry Johnson and wife, and sister of the late L. B. Johnson, was drowned last Friday afternoon about 5:30 o clock, when thrown from a mule she was riding into the waters of the Cane Creek Canal. Mr. and Mrs. Milam had gone to the field to see about a piece of corn which he was afraid would overflow due to heavy rains, and they found a large drift in the canal. Mr. Milam told his wife to take the mules home and he would try to break up the drift and keep the water going down to the canal instead of flowing over the field. As Mrs. Milam started across the bridge, Mr. Milam heard her scream as if she was frightened and he ran to see about her. When he got to the bridge he could see neither his wife nor the mules, but followed their tracks up the field and saw the mules but his wife was not there. He ran back to the canal to search for her and not finding her, sent for help. Soon a crowd had gathered and the search went on till near midnight, when it was given up until the next morning. About daybreak her body was found by her husband 50 yards or more from where she had been thrown into the water. Evidently the body had been held under drifts, as the water was high and full of drifts. Mrs. Milam was about 38 years old, and is survived by her parents, her husband, three sons, Ray, Ralph and L. B., one daughter, Mrs. Bob (Ruth) Goff and two grandchildren, two brothers, Hubert and Drew, all of who live in this county. Funeral services were conducted at Oak Grove Church with Rev. Brown of the M. E. Church at Scotts Hill officiating, with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
