Notes - Served in World War II. Entered the Army March 5, 1944. He was in boot camp in Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells, Texas. Left the Army March 12, 1946. Was a private first class. Serial number was 35071097. Major campaigns were in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Served in the 3rd Army, 5th Division under Lieutenant Colonel Birdsong. The 3rd Army was commanded by General Patton. Was in Company K, 11th Regiment, 3rd Platoon, 3rd Squad. He sailed for Scotland on August 11, 1944 on the ship Ernie Pyle. He arrived in Scotland on August 23, 1944. He then went to London and crossed the channel to France. He then traveled to Germany. He was involved in early crossings of the Frankfurt and Rhine. At one point during a night battle Germans were approaching and were fended off by throwing mud balls, rocks and sticks so that their position was not compromised by gun flame. Was reported missing for three days at one point while in Germany. He found lots of antique German coins and buried them. As far as is known, they are still there today.
Worked as a manager of the ice cream department in a dairy. Worked at the Sanitary Milk Dairy in Morgantown from July 1946 to 1972. (He worked at Sanitary Milk two years before the war.) When the Sanitary Milk Dairy closed, he worked at the WVU Dairy as a technician until 1986 when he retired. Suffered a bout of Polymyalgia Rheumatica in 1991. Highest grade finished = 12.
