Obit--1891 - The Democrat newspaper
Last week the Democrat stated sorrowfully that James H. Gough was in such a feeble condition that he was not expected to live; and within twenty-four hours of the issuing of that paper he passed to the other world. He let loose his hold on mortal existence at 1:45 on Thursday morning, and his remains were laid at the Catholic Cemetery on Friday, followed by a large number of mourning friends as well as relatives. Mr. Gough was born in Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky, October 18, 1813, and hence was 77 years old last October. In 1836, when all this region was nearly a wilderness, with only a house here and there, he settled on a farm in Monroe county, MO. He was always a good citizen, a good neighbor, an industrious and enterprising man. He toiled on diligently with those who were struggling to plant civilization in these western lands. As a farmer, stock-raiser and trader he was successful, and he secured one of the best farms in this section of country, and always had it well stocked with large herds of cattle and many horses.
Though a driving business man and making money, he never was a hard man, but always considerate of the needs of the poor, and kindly to his fellow men. He generally lived in peace with all mankind, and had the respect of all who knew him. He was a consistent member of the Catholic church, and died in the faith.
Some years ago declining health compelled him to surrender his business to his children, and he moved to Shelbina where he lived very quietly and peacefully, waiting for the change that should come, with no misgivings as to the future. His kindly smile and greeting, his example of honesty and faith will be missed, not by his special friends only, but by the whole community. When a good man dies all feel the loss.
