The earliest record of Robert Carpenter is in the 1840 census for Henderson Co,TN where he appears as head of household consistent with the Bible Records provided by Mrs Helen Carpenter Davenport Po Box 10285 Springfield,MO 65808.
He is also listed in the 1850 census in Henderson county with his wife Matilda and all of the children appearing on the second page of the Bible. Only one book of land records survived the Civil War days in Henderson Co. It contains a record where Robert Carpenter sold 250 acres of land to Edmond gawf; witnessed John A Criner and Elias Goff. This deed is dated Oct 8,1851 recorded Jan 8,1856. Adjoining property owners were Stephen Hefley, jackson Petty,Daniel mayberry, Edmon Gawfs and James Long.
Robert Carpenter appeared to be running a store at the time of the 1840 census as his occupation was categorized as "trade of Manufacturing". He left Henderson County after 1851 and before 1855. By the beginning of the Civil War the entire family had settled in Maxville in Lawrence County,Ar now Sharp Co,Ark. Many of their descendants remain there.

Ginny - I have Robert CARPENTER as being b. in Tennessee (1850 & 1870 census). I didn't check to see what his son Edmund said. The only thing I saw that said Alabama was the 1880 census where Polly CARPENTER (listed as aunt of Clay SHIRLEY) said her father was b. AL.
Yes, this is true, I have one census, that says he was born TN and was GERMAN.
Most census do say he was born Tn.....but lots of things hint at ALA. Helen Carpenter Davenport of Sharp Co. did some research on the Carpenters few yrs back ( she is the one that published the information that was in Robert and Matilda`s Bible about the list of children and grandchilden) she seems to think he or the Carpenters came from ALA also.
I wish they had left a better trail for us to follow..............and they moved around more back in those days than I do now.............with an automobile.
Thanks for sending this wealth of info.....

??? male - there is a son in 1830 census age 5-10 that doesn't show in 1840 census (he could have died or is on his own - this male could have been named Lewis - which would mean we have children of Matilda all named after our principal parties (Lewis, Edmund, Rhodica, Henry-would help this premise if the others were found to be named after Roberty's family - OR, if Matilda felt this strongly about family, perhaps there are other clues here to her family)
