From the book "The History of Ky Illustrated 1866" William Henry Gough, a highly esteemed citizen of Brandenburg, Meade Co., Ky was born Oct 30, 1826 in Breckinridge County. His grandfather, Cornelius Gough, was an early settler in that county, removing with his family from Scott Couty, KY. He settled on the Ohio River near Flint Island and developed a farm. Cornelius Gough died Dec 10, 1833 of cholera, while on a trading expedition in the South. He had seven children, the eldest of whom was Thomas J. Gough, the father of William Henry Gough. He was born in Scott County KY, March 3, 1805, received a good English education and served in the several offices of constable, jailer and associate justice of Brechinridge County. Having removed to Meade County, he was elected to the State Legislature in 1837 and was a member of the constitutional convention of 1849. He also served that county as school commissioner for several years, and until his death, August 5, 1873. His first marriage, was August 9, 1825 to Miss Teresa Burch, daughter of Walter Burch. She was born January 2, 1805 and died May 9, 1841, leaving two children, viz.: William H. and Susan (deceased wife of Lewis Pullen). He then married Agnes Burch, who died without issue, after which he contracted an alliance with Christina McGill, who still survived him and is the mother of Mary C. (Popham). William H. Gough was chiefly reared and educated in Meade County, and in 1849 became deputy sheriff and was elected the first sheriff of Meade County under the present constitution, serving one term, from which time until 1870 he engaged in farming. In the last named year he was elected to the office of clerk of the Meade County Court, a position he has held for the past sixteen years. He married in 1854, Mrs. Columbia (Philpott) Burch, widow of John H. Burch. She was born in Meade County and is a daughter of John F. Philpott and Emaline Hardin. Mr. Gough is one of the most influential men of Meade County, a Democrate in politics and a member of the Catholic Church.
