Will of Bennet Greenwell recorded in Will bk. F. pp. 183-84
"In the name of God Amen, I, Bennet Greenwell of the County of Scott and the State of Kentucky, being old and infirm and knowing the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time and manner thereof- have made this my last will and testament in the manner and form following, viz;
After my just debts and funeral expense are paid by Executor and Executrix hereinafter named shall proceed with commissioners to be appointed as the law directs to pay off my beloved wife, Allusia Greenwell's dower on the farm on which I now reside and so arrange the same as to furnish ample timber and fuel for the support of the same.
My further will is that my slaves shall be appraised and my widow take her choice of the one third as per valuation. The residue of my slaves shall be equally divided amongst my legatees, that is to say Wilfred Greenwell, Benedict Greenwell, Ann Mills, Elizabeth Jones, and the infant heirs of Clare Jackson, dec'd., James Greenwell, Anastatia Greenwell, A. M. Greenwell, the infant children of Robert A. Greenwell, dec'd, Julia Twyman and Catherine Greenwell.
My will is that the residue of my farm after the allotment of my wife's dower together with my oak land on the White Oak branch in the County be sold at public sale for the one third of the amount in hand and the residue in two equal annual payments. The whole of my personal property to be sold on such credit as my Executors may deem proper.
And whereas I have given at different times various sums of slaves and other property to my legatees above names, all of which I have charged them with the above; the above sums so charged to be taken into the amount of my estate before a dividend is made.
My widow to have her legal proportion and the residue equally divided amongst the above named legatees and lastly-I appoint my bellowed wife, Allusia Greenwell and A. M. Greenwell my executrix and executor, hereby revoking all former wills which I may have made.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 4th day of June in the year of our Lord 1838."

8. Bennett Greenwell, born in St. Mary Co., Maryland on 07 Dec 1761, died 12 July 1838 in Scott Co., Kentucky. Bennett and Henry S. (probably a brother) Greenwell were part of the first group of colonists to settle in Scott Co., Kentucky, formerly know as Woodford in the years 1786 and 1787. There is a reference to Bennett and Henry in a book titled, "The Centenary of Catholicity in Kentucky" by Ben. J. Webb, Chapter VI - The Scott County Catholic Settlement, page 89. The book was copyrighted 1884. The book also indicates that Bennett died in 1838 at the age of 67. However, the arithematic between the date of his birth and death does not add to an age of 67. Bennett may have had a second wife as well. There is also a reference to a Bennett Greenwell on the web page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdstmary/mrgs/mrg_g.htm who married a Mary Wheatley on 10 Jul 1806. This date was after his first wife's death in 1802 and before Bennett's death in 1838. David GirtenHeather, sorry I haven't seen this before.
William Benedict Greenwell b.1832 was the son of Benedict and Maria Gough Greenwell. He is not, however, your ancestor. Meade County KY Records Vol. 2 has marriage of William B. Greenwell 1857, of age, b. Meade Co., to Britana Brown, consent of father, Richard, also b. Meade Co. License Date of 9/12/1857; marriage date 12/14/1857, Minister Father Patrick MacNicholas.
William Benedict Greenwell b.1837 Meade, KY, s/o John F. and Sarah Winifred Parr Greenwell is found in John F.'s household 1850 age 14. Meade County KY Records Vol. 2 has marriage of Wm. B. Greenwell 1857, certified by father John F., b. Meade Co., to Osbourn, Eliza J,. consent of mother, b. Meade Co. License Date: 11/17/1857; Marriage Date: 11/24/1857.
John F. Greenwell's father, John Wilfred Greenwell, was brother or half-brother to Benedict Greenwell. Their father was Bennett Greenwell of the early Elkhorn settlement of Scott county, KY.
