Longtime Union County resident, Helen Dean Thomas, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2015, at her home, surrounded by the love of close family. Helen Dean was born in Morganfield, Ky., on June 2, 1927, to Sylvester and Regina (Clements) Greenwell.
Helen Dean graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1945, and married Joseph Leonard (Kinky) Thomas on February 12, 1947. She worked for the U.S. Social Security office in Evansville, Ind., before beginning her lifelong passion of raising her nine children and being on the family farm.
She was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Parish in Uniontown, Ky., and remained strong in her Catholic faith throughout her days. She enjoyed sewing, traveling and reading her Wall Street Journal. Helen Dean was beautiful inside and out with an innate kindness about her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Leonard (Kinky) Thomas; daughter-in-law, Andrea Thomas; granddaughter, Caroline; her parents; brothers, Tommy and Billy Don; and sisters, Joan and Charlotte .
Helen Dean is survived by her children and their spouses, Mariam and Bill Richardson, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Dr. Jackie and Alan Singleton, of Floyds Knobs, Ind., Gina and Don Pearson, of Jackson, Tenn., Debby and Dr. William Tapp, Donnie and Cheryl Thomas, Billy Ray and Linda Thomas, Darrell and Donna Thomas, Jill and Gary Utley, and Phil and Hayley Thomas all, of Morganfield, Ky. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Helen Dean is survived by one brother, Gerald (Marilyn) Greenwell, of Uniontown, Ky.; and two sisters, Patsy Whitaker, of Henderson, Ky., and Marie (Mike) Guillerman, of Mt. Washington, Ky.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Uniontown, Ky., with Fr. Randy Howard officiating. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with prayers at 8 p.m. and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield, Ky. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown, Ky.
The family sends heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers who have provided wonderful care and love over several weeks. The family also requests that expressions of sympathy go to St. Agnes Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Hospice and John Paul II Catholic School.
