One of the first to settle here was William W. (Billy) Butler, a well-known Methodist evangelist. He first married Martha E. Stanfill and their only child was Elbert Eldest Butler, who married Ida Davenport and was one of our first RFD'ers. After Martha's death, Billy married Eliza Edwards. Their children with spouses were: Festus, married Mary Choate; Mary (Mrs. Charlie) Benson; Joseph, married Viola Nethery; Robert F. (Bob), never married; John married Hazel Permenter; George, married Hesco Cook; and Charles Paul, married first Patrice Thompson and then Josephine Alexander Belew. Columbus Butler, a half brother of Billy's married first an Edwards and later married again. Among children were: Edward, Nora Mae (Mrs. Charlie) Duck; Amanda who married Will Culp; Alva, married a Huckaby, and Ella (husband's name unknown). Columbus by his 2nd marriage had a son, Benjamin (Ben). Most of these Butlers left here long ago. Billy moved to Crockett County and farmed around Bells and preached there. He established and preached for the later well-known Cypress M. E. Church near Bells." -------- The History of Scotts Hill, Tennessee, Gordon H. Turner, Sr., (Carter Printing Company, Southaven, Mississippi, 1977). Rural Free Delivery ("RFD") service began out of Scotts Hill on Aug. 15, 1904. The very first carriers were John H. Fanning and Elbert E. Butler who, after a few years, resigned and moved to Lexington to become prominent businessmen. W. Butler and Martha Stanfill Butler, was born September 17, 1878, in Henderson County, and died at his home in Lexington on November 30, 1945, aged 67 years. His death followed an illness of about eight years. He is survived by his wife, Ida Belle Davenport Butler, and four children: Mrs. Lloyd Montgomery and Holmes Butler of Lexington, Mrs. Williard Richardson of Washington D. C., and Woodrow Butler of the U. S. Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Elbert Gerald, and a daughter, Allene. When a young man he finished a scientific course at Scotts Hill College, and was teaching school at the time of his marriage. Afterwards he became a rural mail carrier and later entered the grocery business in Lexington and continued in this business for 25 years. He is remembered for his honesty in business affairs.
