Notes from phone conversation with James "Ed" Goff, 2/19/2001: Lewis was in KY in1830. Marinda's maiden name is KELLY from the Point Pleasant area in Decatur Co., 3-4 miles from where Lewis had his cabin (cabin was near Corinth Cem. and is now being used as a barn). Ed's Uncle Willie was the only one who knew where Lewis & Marinda were buried so Ed's father had Uncle Willie show him where & Ed's father had markers erected. Artie Van GOFF WHITE TOWNSELL moved in with Uncle Willie when they were both in their 80's. They each lived on opposite ends of the cabin and Willie had the only door between to the two sides sealed shut so folks wouldn't get the wrong idea. There's a story that a family was coming through Scotts Hill, on their way west and got sick and died. Leaving two boys orphaned that were raised by Edmond GOFF. They then took the surname GOFF. This story runs through several branches. Perhaps the two orphans were John/William Henry GOFF & Lewis GOFF. There's no reference before 1850 of Lewis GOFF. One cousin thought the original name was BARR. But BARR is in The History of Scotts Hill, TN as the possible birth name of Micajah SCOTT. Per Kim Hurt, desc. of James C (or G) GOFF, the original family name was BARLOW.

Received grant from TN for 150 acres on 9 Mar 1854 in Decatur Co. The land was about a quarter mile from Corinth Church. He built a fine log house, in which he lived and reared his family. The house is still standing but is badly in need of repairs.

According to a desc., Harry BROAD's great aunt Clara, there were two more boys who died at birth.
      ----------------------
From an e-mail from James "Ed" Goff
I have found my first written comment on the Barlow story but it is not very old. It is undated but is about 1988 as she is writting me in regards a trip we took in that year.

The writer was my cousin, born 1909 and a person who knew everyone. On the trip mentioned above she took me to see the log cabin where Lewis lived. It was still used as a barn. Showed me Corinth church and the grave yard.

      She wrote,
"I have been told that Barlow story (2 versions of it) since Curry Goff days of preaching in the Scotts Hill Pentecost Church. Also in Phoenix I met a descendant of Sam Goff from the state of Washington. He favored your Dad, even had the little "tit" looking thing in his eye. He said we were first Barlows and changed to Goffs after signing a petition to behead some ruler in England and came here via Ireland."

Sam Goff was Lewis's 8th child born 1859. He started to Alaska for the gold rush and stopped in Seattle to run a store.

That is the first time I heard that I heard the tale and do not believe it.

Hazel in the first part was referring to the story of parents died and orphans raised Goffs.

The 1850 and 1860 census shows a William Goff as son of Louis Goff. He disappeared from the record after 1850 census. I have email from Harry Broad a descendant of Samuel Dorsey Goff who went to Seattle during Alaska gold rush and stayed. it answers that question.
      >
Harry says his aunt who was 82 in 1970 wrote a letter to him in answer to questions he had asked in which she said:

Louis Goff born in 1801 SC of PA Dutch parents. Date wrong but interesting otherwise. Married Marinda Kelly born 1811 of Irish farmer parents. Death dates given that are different from one on marker but close.
They were parents of following: Catherine (Amanda?) who married a Mr. Singleton who were parents of 4 boys and 2 girls.<
Louis son William married a Miss O'Neal. They had one son. William died in prison during Civil War in 3rd part of the rebellion. His son became a farmer.
There is data on other children of Louis that repeats what you already have.

This is the source of Marinda being a Kelley.
      ------
Per Ed, The boundary line of Henderson County in 1840 was the line separating Range 7 and Range 8. The land grant states that Lewis's land lay on Range 7 and Range 8. I.E.. the boundary line of Henderson County. In 1849 a section of Henderson County was transferred to Decatur County which moved the line. (so Louis did not move, the county boundaries moved).
