Marriage Notes for THOMAS CARPENTER and REBECCA CLEMENTS:
"Thomas M. Carpenter married Rebecca Clements about 1860. He lived near Evening Shade (Sharp Co. AR.) with his wife, his mother-in-law, and in due time his son Francis. On 24 October 1861, at Pocahontas, he enlisted in Company F., 4th (McCarber's) Arkansas Infantry, CSA and rose to the rank of Captain. He was wonded and captured at Hatchies Bridge or Corinth on 3-5 October 1862. He was imprisoned at Luka, Mississippi; on 17 January 1863 he was declared recovered from his wound; on 19 June 1863 he died in captivity. I have no idea what may have happed to his widow Rebecca or to little Francis M. Carpenter." From a report sent to me by Glenda Brothers on June 12, 1999
--------------------------
Francis is my husband's great aunt. She was born 1860 near Evening Shade P.O., Franklin Twsp according to the 1860 census. Her parents were Thomas and Rebecca Carpenter. I assume he was killed in the Civil War. I found some war records for him. In 1865, her mother Rebecca married James Perry Horn in Lawrence Co., AR in the same area. In the 1870 census in Sharp Co., AR at the Evening Shade P.O., Piney Forks twsp (Actually the same place. Just a county name change.) the family is found with Francis age 10, James age 4, Missouri age 2 and mother in law Mary (Elizabeth)Clem (Clements) age 68 b NC. Other children later born were Martha abt. 1870 and Henry abt 1879, all children born in AR. Fannie lived in Bokoshe, OK and died at a ripe old age in the Spiro Nursing Home in Spiro, OK near Bokoshe. Francis married Robert Kersey and they adopted a son and called him Bob Kersey. He owned the Kersey Place on the Old Butterfield Stage Route around the Red Oak and Panama, OK areas. Then he went to Texas. I am told this by Thelma Horne, wife of Ellis Horne, my husband's mother, who is 90 years old now. Please contact me.
