    • From the military service records on microfilm at Fold3 and the U.S. Soldiers and Sailors Data Base on-line: John H. Manning was born in Meade County, Kentucky. His last residence before military service was New Haven, Nelson County, Kentucky. He was 5 foot, 5 inches tall, with dark complexion, black eyes, dark hair and by occupation a blacksmith. At age 27 John enlisted at Fort Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana and on July 27, 1861 mustered-in at the same place for a period of three years. He was in Captain Upton Wilson's Company I, Louisville Legion, 5th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, USA (Union Army) Cause of death: "chronic diarrhea." Place of death: Army Field Hospital #16, Nashville, Tennessee. His next of kin was given as Corporal Thomas J. Manning of the same unit.
