LEBANON ENTERPRISE OBITUARY - 01/19/1917
The following account of the death of a former Marion County citizen appeared in the Owensboro Inquirer a few days ago. Mr. Mattingly is a relative of the well-known Mattingly family of this county, and although he has probably been away from here more than two generations, he will doubtless be remembered by some of the older people. Austin D. Mattingly, the eldest citizen of Whitesville, passed away Tuesday morning at his home following an illness caused by infirmities incident to advanced age. On November 1, 1916, the esteemed resident of Whitesville observed his 88th birthday and was then as hale and hearty as a man of 60 years. At his bedside at the time of his death were his children and sisters. The deceased was born November 1, 1828, in Marion County. When a young man he moved to this county and took up farming. Later he engaged in the mercantile business and following that became a tobacconist. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Barlett, who died about six years ago. He was a devout member of the Catholic Church. Surviving him are his two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Ramsey and Mrs. O. C. Haynes, and three sisters, Mrs. H. C. Bartlett, of this city, Mrs. Nan Aud, of Knoxville, and Mrs. Lyde Monarch, of Louisville. Following funeral services the burial took place in Elmwood Cemetery.
