Notes - Captain John Bobb Mattingly's obit.
Esteemed Citizen Died Saturday Capt. J. B. Mattingly Passed Away At Home of Mrs. A. F. Barbour - Yazoo and Warren counties lost one of their most prominent citizens last Saturday morning when Capt. James Bobb Mattingly, age 88, of Yazoo City and Vicksburg, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. F. Barbour, on Monroe street, at 8 o'clock in the morning.?? Funeral services were held from the home of his daughter at 9 o'clock Sunday morning with Rev Father P. C. Doyle, priest of St. Mary's Catholic church officiating. Following services here the body was carried to Vicksburg for in interment. Capt. Mattingly is survived by one son, W. L. Mattingly, of Vicksburg and two daughters Mrs Nailor Roach of Vicksburg and Mrs. A. F. Barbour of Yazoo City.??
James Bobb Mattingly was born in Vicksburg on August 4, 1843, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Austin D. Mattingly, who had emigrated to that city from Kentucky.??
He enlisted in the Confederate Army on the first day of the war between the states, surviving the principal battles of the war without a wound. He enlisted in Company L, Mississippi Infantry, composed of Claiborne and Warren county soldiers, and later served with Wirt Adams' Regiment, Wood's Regiment and Cleveland's Cavalry.?? He was in the battle of Shiloh, in which General Albert Sidney Johnston was wounded, Lookout Mountain, and the seige of Vicksburg.
He was captured by the federals and imprisoned on a steamboat which took him up the Mississippi River, but upon reaching a point near Friars Point, Capt. Mattingly dived from the top deck of the federal boat, escaped the shots from their guns, and swam to shore.?? Making his way through the swamps and the then wilderness of the Mississippi Delta, he finally emerged at the home of a Mr. Bobo, prominent land owner of Clarksdale, who cared for him until he recuperated. There he borrowed a mule from a negro and made his way back to his regiment near Vicksburg.??
Immediately after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox,- Captain Mattingly married Miss Catherine Hullum of Warren County, to which union there was born three children.?? He immediately entered business with his father, who organized and operated the Mattingly Milling Company, of which he later served as president and manager.??
He also organized and served as president of the Home Insurance Company of Vicksburg, with his father. After his father's death, Capt. Mattingly organized and managed several other enterprises in the city of Vicksburg, among which were the Vicksburg Electric Light Plant and the Vicksburg Street Railway system.?? He was owner and captain of the Joe Seay, a tugboat engaged in towing on the Mississippi River; he was a stockholder and director of the old Yazoo and Tallahassee Transportation Company that operated steamboats on the Yazoo River; also he operated a coal company that furnished coal for the city of Vicksburg and all river boats on the Mississippi.?? In addition to the above, Capt. Mattingly owned the Ball Ground Plantation, just outside of Vicksburg, and another large plantation nearby.
He had the distinction of installing the first telephone system in Mississippi having put up one of his own making in the office of his coal company. These extensive operations marked Captain Mattingly among Vicksburg's most esteemed, progressive and beloved citizens.
In his later years he came to Yazoo City and engaged in the insurance business with his son-in-law, A. F. Barbour, and later served as secretary of the Yazoo City Elks Club for a number of years.
When his health failed a few years ago, he made his home in Yazoo City with his daughter, spending part of his time with his other daughter in Vicksburg. Until the last few months he was a daily visitor to the Elks Club, but was confined to his bed the last few months. Death was due to a combination of developments caused by old age.
He was a member of the Catholic faith. Pall bearers were: Active W. A. Henry, O. G. Kelly, Colin Campbell, F. G. Schmitt, Charles W. Gregory, I. H. Barnwell, H. B. Luckett and F. H. Hamel. Honorary: Dr. J. W. Billington, I. M. Kelly, J. W. Castle, and C. E. Holmes, all Confederate veterans.???? CLIPPED FROM The Yazoo Herald?? Yazoo City, Mississippi 06 Oct 1931, Tue?? ????? Page 1
