  • Notes
    • I've done some work on this, but not sure that I have the answers. I think the key to solving this mystery might be the first wife of Thomas Mattingly. His children were all by the first, unknown wife and not Elizabeth Miles. Or, do we have an undiscovered Neale or Digges connection?

The will of Elizabeth (Miles) Mattingly:

Will of Elizabeth Miles, SMC, 4/12/1773-7/1/1773. 3 daughters-in-law: Ann, Elizabeth, and Mary Mattingly, one negro and residue of estate after legacies are paid. Sister-in-law: Ann Mattingly, 2 pr. shoes and a pr. of silk mitts. Sisters: Lendenfin Wick (Belinda Fenwick) and Eleanor Miles, my 2 stone rings. Sister: Bitha Wildman, my silver buckles. Sister: Becky Hill, my cotton gown. Mother-in-law: Ann Mattingly, my red cloak. Sister-in-law: Elizabeth, my silk cloak. Sister-in-law: Mary McWilliams, an apron. To: George Slye, my gold ring. To: Eleanor and Raphael Neale, sleeve buttons. To: Mrs. Elizabeth Neale, Sr., my parson gown. Exec: Father-in-law, Clement Mattingly. Wit: Raphael Neale, Ann Gibson. (Maryland Calendar of Wills).

      Legatees:

      1. Ann Mattingly, daughter-in-law (her stepdaughter, daughter of Thomas Mattingly and first wife)

      2. Elizabeth Mattingly, daughter-in-law (her stepdaughter, daughter of Thomas Mattingly and first wife)

      3. Mary Mattingly, daughter-in-law (her stepdaughter, daughter of Thomas Mattingly and first wife)

      4. Ann Mattingly, sister-in-law (sister of her husband, Thomas Mattingly)

      5. Belinda Fenwick, sister (yes)

      6. Eleanor Miles, sister (yes)

      7. Bitha Wildman, sister (yes)

      8. Becky Hill, sister (yes)

      9. Ann Mattingly, mother-in-law (yes, wife of Clement Mattingly, father of Thomas)

      10. Elizabeth, sister-in-law (yes, sister of her husband, Thomas Mattingly)

      11. Mary McWilliams, sister-in-law (yes, she was Mary Ann Mattingly, her husband's sister, and she married Thomas McWilliams, Jr.)

      12. George Slye (husband of Clare Neale by this time or is it via his mother, Mary Boarman who married first, John Gardiner)

      13. Eleanor Neale (daughter of Raphael Neale and Elizabeth Digges of SMC)

      14. Raphael Neale (daughter of Raphael Neale and Elizabeth Digges of SMC)

      15. Mrs. Elizabeth Neale, Sr. (Elizabeth Digges, wife of Raphael Neale of SMC).

      16. Clement Mattingly, father-in-law (yes, father of her husband, Thomas Mattingly)

      Witnesses:

      1. Raphael Neale (of St. Mary's County, father of Raphael Neale named in the will of Elizabeth (Miles) Mattingly and husband of Elizabeth Digges)

      2. Ann Gibson (This is Ann Neale, wife of William Gibson. She was the sister of Raphael Neale and James Neale, husband of Elizabeth Guibert, and they were the children of Roswell Neale and Elizabeth Blackistone).

Will of Raphael Neale, St. Mary's Co., 6/13/1771-3/29/1788. The land I have sold in Frederick County called part of "Bedford" has not yet been conveyed, my having bond for security. Whenever the stipulations are punctually complied with and the balance paid off, I direct my Executor to make good and sufficient deeds to every person it concerns. The remaining part of "Bedford" is to be sold. Wife: Elizabeth Neale, one third of the proceeds from the sale of part of "Bedford". She is to also have one third of my dwelling plantation during her life and then to my son, Raphael Neale. Daughter: Elizabeth Neale, two thirds of the proceeds from the sale of part of "Bedford." Son: Raphael Neale, all my part of a mill that adjoins my dwelling plantation. Daughter: Eleanor Neale, is to live with her mother, Elizabeth Neale, and her brother, Raphael Neale, at no cost until she marries or is otherwise provided for. The balance of my estate is to be equally divided between my wife, Elizabeth Neale, and my children, Raphael Neale and Eleanor Neale. Exec.: Wife, Elizabeth Neale. Wit.: Thomas Mattingly, Jeremiah Neale, Roswell Gibson. NOTE: Widow renounced executorship of will. (St. Mary's County, Maryland Wills, 1776-1791 by Linda Reno and Joann Humphries).

Will of Edward Digges, SMC 6/10/1769-12/18/1769. Being conscious that it was my father's will that my brothers William and Henry Digges should have an equal part with me of all the lands in MD or elsewhere, shall put lands for sale for the discharge of debts; all lands in Frederick Co., which belong to me shall be sold for the equal benefit of daughters: Elizabeth, Eleanor, and Mary Digges. Desire that my share of "Hampton Iron Works" be sold. Son: John, 1/5 of personal estate; in case he returns to MD and not a religious, otherwise it shall be equally divided between daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Eleanor. Children: Edward and Ann, 35 lbs. currency annually during their life by 3 daughters. Desire son John to pay 1/5 part. Sons-in-law: Charles and Jesse Wharton, 10 guineas. Brother: William, 1/2 of money due on Dillinger's bond when discharged and the other half to 3 daughters. Desire brother William to have a patent for tract on Little Pipe Creek, which he had a dispute with Barrister Charles Carroll, Esq., which we agreed to divide when patented. Execs: 3 daughters and brothers-in-law, Raphael Neale and George Slye. Wit: Elizabeth Plowden, Mary Wimsatt, Joseph Harding. Probated by Wilfred Neale and his wife Elizabeth, formerly Elizabeth Digges; Eleanor Digges; Raphael Neale; and George Slye. (Maryland Calendar of Wills).

And, simply because all of this is not confusing enough, Raphael Neale and wife, Sarah (supposedly nee Howard from England, but I'm wondering) of Charles County had children named Eleanor and Raphael living at the same time as the children of Raphael and Elizabeth Digges.

Will of Raphael Neale, Charles Co., 3/5/1784-5/1/1784. Wife: Sarah, my dwelling plantation during her life and if she dies before my two daughters marry, then they should have 2 rooms in my house as long as they live single. Son: Joseph, my dwelling plantation after his mother's death and as much of that pt. of the land that is now in the possession of my mother as will make my sd. dwelling plantation equal in number of acres now in the possession of my mother. Brothers: Leonard, Charles, and Francis Neale the plantation where my mother now lives which I have not before willed during their lives and then to my son, Charles but when he comes of age they are to give up enough land with the dwellings thereon as will be sufficient for him and his people to work. Wife: Sarah, negroes Tom and his wife Nell, Stephen, Jane, and Kate; my riding horse; and the old sorrel mare commonly called hers. Daughter: Mary Ann, negroes Bob and Big Chloe; and a horse "Monkey". Daughter: Eleanor, negroes Nick and Sarah and a young sorrel mare. Son: Joseph, negroes Nace and Little Chloe. Son: Charles, negroes Frank and Charity. After my wife's thirds, the remainder to be equally divided among my 4 children Joseph, Charles, Mary Ann, and Eleanor. Execs: Wife, Sarah and nephew, William Chandler Brent. Wit: Charles Pye, Walter Pye, Thomas Simms.

Will of Sarah Neale, Charles Co., 1784-5/22/1784. Daughter: Mary Ann, negroes Tom, Moll, Kate. Daughter: Eleanor, negroes Stephen and Jane. Son: Charles, my daughters Mary Ann and Eleanor to pay 150 lbs. crop tobacco each per year for the education of son Charles until he arrives at age 18 and I give Charles the rest of my estate. Sister-in-law: Clare Slye, Exec., to have guardianship and tuition of my children during their minority. Wit: Joseph Matthews, William C. Brent.

Will of Eleanor Neale, Charles Co., 5/24/1790-2/11/1791. Sister: Mary Ann Neale, all my property, which is all personal. Exec: Sister, Mary Ann. Wit: Robert Brent, Dorothea Brent.
