DR. BURCH VANDON RALEY Dr. Burch Raley, 91, died Saturday at the Fayetteville Veterans Home with his family by his side. He was born March 31, 1917, in Paragould, AR., to James Jefferson Raley and Mary Eva Burch Raley.
Raised in Little Rock, he graduated Catholic High in l935, and was noted high school athlete who passed up a football scholarship with the University of Arkansas to attend medical school. He graduated from University of Arkansas Medical School in l942, he married Elizabeth Jean Barnett, beginning a loving and devoted relationship of forty eight years. In that year he left for service as a medical officer with the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving with the 78th Seabee Battalion in the South Pacific. After the war, he completed his residency at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis, MO and worked in private practice there. In l951, Burch and Betty returned to Little Rock where they began raising a family of seven sons. Dr. Raley worked for the Veterans Administration in Little Rock and Fayetteville from l952 to l979, where he retired from the position of Chief of Medicine at the Fayetteville Veterans Administration Hospital. During 27 years of service with the VA as a board certified internist, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the gratitude of countless veterans and their families. Burch was a dedicated and infinitely patient father to his seven sons. He was a tireless worker both in and out of his profession. Whatever he did, he did well, from bricklaying to carpentry to tennis, which he played well into his eighties. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him. He was preceded in death by Betty, two of his sons, Burch and Kevin , two brothers, Jay and Thomas and two sisters, Mary and Marion and by his second wife, Laura Joe Huff Raley. He is survived by five sons: Mike (Elau), Steve (Melinda), Dennis (Wendy), Mark (Tammy) Patrick Raley, two brothers, Robert and Ed and beloved daughter-in-law, Susan Raley. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Laura Raley, Shannon Raley, Anna Cagle, Bill Raley and Megan Raley, all of Fayetteville and Robin Raley of Little Rock. He leaves four great grandchildren: Courtney, Brittany, Justin and Brianna Cagle of Fayetteville. Dr. Raley was a man who truly loved life and the people who shared it with him. He will be greatly missed. A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3rd between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Moores Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Comfort Cemetery. The family suggest in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be sent to UAMS Medical Center Hospital Initiative, 4301 W, Markham#716, Little Rock, Ar 72205.
