I picked up on this discussion late so I don't know if this has been mentioned already or is not topical...
Cunningham, J.B. The Cunningham Family of Daviess County Indianna and Gough, Shircliff, Rainey and Hopkins Alliances. Pub. by author. 1965 Prof Emeritus University of Illinois. pg 15-16.
Cunningham cites:
Marriage Records of Washington Co, KY by Anne Walter Burns Bell
p 117 John Shircliff, married (1) Jane Booth; Jeremiah Brothers, guardian. "According to tradition. John and Jane raised several children. Jane died bet. 1815 and 1822."
p. 117 19 Apr 1822 John Shircliff married (2) Mary Gough, dau. of Charles and Mary Gough.
good morning mike, somewhere i have heard charles gough called a patriot of the revolution. i hope it's true. he would be my link to joing the sons of the american revolution. as my line runs to his daughter mary and her husband john shircliff. i have information on thier decendants and would be delighted to share. this search has been wonderful. are there books or articles on the goughs that you could recommend? john shircliff is said to have fought at new orleans with gen'l jackson. thank you and happy weekend! john e brown Ginger Brown

Could this be a son of John Shercliffe and his first wife Jane Booth?? They married in 1799, the 30 -40 would be 1800 to 1810.

Thomas Shircliffe living next door to John Shercliffe is too young to be the brother of John; besides his brother Thomas died in Meade Co, KY.

>Now I wonder if this Thomas is a son of John and Mary Shircliffe?

On Ancestry there is a story attached to John Shercliffe on a family tree:
Printed on page 594 "History of Daviess County, Indiana" as part of the biography of Frank A. McMullen, daughter of Archie McMullen and Laura Shirkliff
"The maternal great-grandparents of Mr. McMullen were John and Mary (Gough) Shirkliff, the former of whom was a soldier in the War of 1812, serving under Andrew Jackson, and at New Orleans received a bullet wound, which bullet he carried until his death. He was a native of Tennessee, the family having originally come from France to the United States, settling first in Carolina, from whence they moved to Tennessee, and later, John Shirkliff moved to Kentucky. After remaining in that state for a time, he moved to Indiana, but later returned to Kentucky, where his death occurred."
John Shircliff appears on the census in 1810 in Washington County, in 1820 in Nelson County, in 1830 & 1840 in Daviess County, Indiana.
There is also a bounty land warrant no. 12131 for 80 acres to Mary Shircliff, widow of John Shircliff, deceased Sergeant in Captain Peacock's Company Thirteenth Regiment Kentucky Militia. War of 1812.dated 1 December 1851, for [legal description] land subject to sale near Vincennes, Indiana.
