Descendents of Edmund Goff and Jane Long of Henderson County TN. Various spellings of the name were Gough, Gaugh, Goff, Goffe, and Gawf. It is said that Edmund and Jane came from North Carolina in a two wheeled oxcart, settling on the current Goff farm in Henderson County before West Tennessee was opened for settlement (1818). Various branches in the family have all stated that this was shortly after the Great Earthquake, and that there were no white neighbors, only indians. This would put the settlement time after 1811-1812. Jane Long Goff was said to have shot and killed an indian with a musket during the first year when she caught him leading off the milk cow. There was no where to get another. The original home was log with a mud and stick chimney. Nothing is left of the site except for some depressions, made sometime after the Civil War by people looking for some 'buried gold or coins.' This site is on Hwy 100 in Henderson County, just west of the Chester County Line, and east of the Goff Branch Creek. Shiloh Baptist Church is near the property.

At some point prior to Edmund Goff it was thought that the name was originally Barlowe or Bartholemew, but no one in my greatgrandfather's generation remembered when or why. A recent conversation with Janice Goff Williams of Alamo indicates that there may not be a Barlowe name change, and that our line is tied to other published Goff lines. The ancestors/relatives listed for Edmund Goff here are from the research of Terry Goff in Ky. I haven't done any research for information prior to Edmund and Jane Goff, and most of the information here is from Goff Reunions and cemetery records.

Standardization of the name to Goff was made after the Civil War. The Goff family were Union sympathizers and many joined the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, US. Several died in prisoner of war camps and another in the North at a hospital.

The Goff Reunion is held at Shiloh Baptist Church on the 2nd Sunday of August, usually with an outdoor meal after church services. The current pastor there is Randy Hart, who also serves as Henderson County Historian.

I am taking the following from 'THE GOFFS AND ALLIED FAMILIES by Melba Allen Goff. The book was copyright 1986.

We have been aware of the Edmund Goff family for years. This doesn't mean we know all we want to know about him. John Goff lived in Duplin County NC and died in 1809. His will names 5 children and wife Elizabeth. she is believed to be his 3rd wife.

Edmond Mathis died in Duplin County in 1783. He must have lived close to John Goff as 2 Goff boys and 1 girl married Mathis Children.

William Goff married Sabra Mathis and they had 8 children. Number 7 was Edmund Goff born 1795 and went to Mississippi. He married C. Carter of L. Wells

Henderson County Edmond Goff was born 1794 and married Jane Long. So far as I am aware, no one has succeeded in determining his parents, however we all think it has to be one of the John Goff boys. This essentially leaves Thomas but no one has proven it. Two men born so close together of the same name has produced confusion. I have a notebook full of material on him. There are others who are investigating him.

My grandfather was named Edmond Goff. The name Lewis Goff appears in the John Goff descendants. William Goff is a frequent name. Lewis and Edmund are not that common names and I think it is significant to have the names appear so frequently in the Goff families.

I have never tried to gather all the data and subject it to the kind of analysis we have done recently. Wonder what it would produce. It would not be an easy task.

This is a quick summary of Edmund Goff.

From Dugal Ross to neighbor Edmond Gawf

A few lines to Edmond Gawf, Esq. Mr. Gawf, Dear Friend: I take the privilege of writing a few lines to let you know I have not forgotten you yet nor none of the rest of my neighbors, I hope to see you all again. I feel that I could meet you all with the best of feelings. I don't feel like I had faught against any union neighbor that I have in the world and if they have anything against me I hope they will forgive me, but as to "seseah" I have nothing to say and it is owing to how they conduct themselves whether I will or not. I don't hear from my old 7th Tennessee Regiment since last May, 1864. They were at Andersonville, Ga., then but I hope my neighbors that were in that regiment have gotten home before now. Mr. Gawf, I was with Thomas W. Gawf before he died. He bore his sickness very patiently. He had a desire to go home, but there was no chance. I tried to send him to Union City after he died but could do nothing. I asked him if he had a hope that he would be better off after death and he said he had. He died in his right mind and went off just as though he had gone to sleep. I must close for I am very weak and trembly. I hope that these lines may find you and family well. Write soon. Please take this over to my house and read it to my wife and children and you will much oblige your friend. Farewell,
      D. W. Ross to Edmond Gawf., Esq.
(looks like Ross was Union, then switched to other side)

By 1850, you could find Presson, Little, and Liles families in the adjacent counties of Benton and Carroll Co. TN. Nearby Henderson Co. would become the home of Dougal and Penelope Moore Ross, Jesse and Martha Ross Little, and Tyson G. Maness by 1860
      -
In 1860, Dougal W. ROSS is on Image 10 and Edmund on Image 20

Ducal ROSS is in District 11 in 1880 Henderson Co., TN,. Our Edmund S. GAWF is in Dist 12. Note the Tyson MANESS listed above. He had land near the land being settled in the Sallie Ann GOFF/Edmund GAWF, Jr. land dispute. Jr. and Sr. did not always mean father and son. It was also used to designate those with the same name, whether related or not. The letter mentions Thomas W. GAWF. Edmund S. GAWF's son, Thomas, died in the Civil War so this was probably written to our Edmund GAWF.
      ------------
The History of Scotts Hill, TN by Gordon S. Turner, p. 370 (just copied narrative, there are also genealogical tables)

Descendants of Edmond GOFF who family came from N. Carolina in the 1820's to settle about half way between Scotts Hill and Henderson.

Note: An Edmund GAUF (GOFF) born in N. Car. in 1794 and his wife, Irene, born in 1796, were in our general area before 1850. This could have been the family that settled betgween Scotts Hill and Henderson. If so, the children soon moved on west and were lost to the parents who remained here. This Edmund GOFF had a brother who may or may not have come to this area but a son did come and settle in the Piney community not too far from the Edmund GOFFS. This brother of Edmund was the father of Elias GOFF, a Yankee soldier who died on the way back here after a stay in Andersonville prison.

Descendants of this Edmund GOFF and his brother (name unknown) have lived in this general area until yet - mostly around Sardis, Saltillo, Parsons, Scotts Hill, Piney and Lexington. The listing which follows is the best which seeminly has been worked out or may ever be compiled. It starts from this Edmund GOFF and after his lines, from his brother (name unknown).
