  • Notes
    • I have the wife of Peter Gough as Eleanor Bowles, daughter of John Bowles (aka Bold/Bould) and Eleanor Cissell, daughter of Luke Cissell and Thomasine Hayden.

Eleanor Cissell m. second, John Medley Thompson by 7/11/1737 and third, John Bradburn about 1750.

1737: "Finchley", 300 ac., St. Clement's Hundred, surveyed 11/29/1670 for Arthur Thompson. Possessor: James Gray, but the land belongs to Richard Hughes* of Virginia. 6/6/1716: 300 ac. from William Maria Farthing to William Hayden. 3/5/1724: 300 ac. from William Maria Farthing to William Hayden. 11/15/1737: 149 ac. from Luke Cecil and wife to John Medley Thompson. (SMC Rent Rolls, 1639-1771).

7/11/1737: Admin. accts. of John Bould, SMC. Sureties: Peter Ford, John MacIntosh. Distribution to: accountant, 1/3. Residue to (orphans): John Bould, James Bould, Elizabeth Bould, Mary Bould, Winifred Bould, Eleanor Bould, Mary Ann Bould. Adm: Eleanor Thompson, wife of John Medley Thompson.

8/4/1752: Admin. accts. of John Medley Thompson. Adm. (surviving): John Bradburn. NOTE: Eleanor died 1751-1752.

I suppose that Ann Gough, sister of Peter Gough, could have been the wife of John Tarlton. If that's the case, she was married first to Kenelm Boult. Kenelm Boult also had a sister named Ann who was single as late as 1745--there's a possibility that she could have been the wife of John Tarlton.

Admin. accts. of Kenelm Boult 9/1/1761; sureties were John Mason and Thomas Watts; distribution to widow, 1/3; residue to children (not named); Exec., Ann Tarlton, wife of John Tarlton (Skinner).

*Richard Hughes of Virginia is undoubtedly Capt. Richard Hewes who d. about 1713 in Northumberland Co., VA. He married Mary Bennett. Mary Bennett m. first, William Johnson; second, Joseph Ball (d. 1711) and by this marriage, she had a daughter, Mary Ball--mother of George Washington; and third, Capt. Richard Hewes.

The first wife of Joseph Ball (d. 1711) was Elizabeth Romney. By this wife, he had (among others) a daughter named Esther Ball who m. Rawleigh Chinn by 1720.

Rawleigh Chinn had three illegitimate children by Margaret Ball (dau. of William Ball, brother of Joseph Ball), Esther's first cousin, who m. Rawleigh Downman (d. 1719 in Lancaster Co., VA). One of these children was Charles Chinn, b. 1723 who m. Cynthia "Seth" Davis and they had a daughter named Mary
      Chinn.

Mary Chinn m. Zela Reno, 8/3/1775 in Fauquier Co., VA and were the ancestors of my husband, Ronnie Reno. You just never know where genealogy is going to lead you! Linda Reno

According to my files, Peter Gough's sister, Elizabeth Gough was the wife of William Bould/Boult. If this is the same Donnelly book, she claims that William Bould/Bowles was the son of George Bowles and Lillias Watson--I totally and completely disagree. There is no proof that George and Lillias ever had any children.

I have the parents of Peter Gough and Elizabeth Gough as James Gough and his second wife, Elizabeth. Donnelly gives her surname as Nevitt. Francis Nevitt and Eleanor Spink had a daughter named Elizabeth, but she was single as late as 1729 (James Gough died in 1725, so this won't work). Currently, I have Elizabeth as the daughter of Thomas Spink and Jane Greenhalgh but I'm not at all sure that's correct. Don Drury said at one point he thought her surname was either Nevitt or Jarboe. We've already talked about Elizabeth Nevitt. I've got two unattached Elizabeth Jarboes during that era, but
nothing to connect them to James Gough.

Admin. accts. of Mr. William Bould (Bowles), 11/2/1743 by Wm. Daft and his wife Elizabeth (Skinner).

7/15/1745: Admin. accts. of William Bond (should be Bould). Sureties: John Mills, James Thompson, Jr. Exec: Elizabeth Daft, wife of William Daft.

9/18/1764: Admin. accts. of James Gough, SMC. NOK: Elizabeth Dart (should be Daft) and Peter Gough, Execs: Priscilla and Stephen Gough.

I have that Eleanor (Bould/Bowles), widow of Peter Gough is the one who married Peter Howard, not her daughter.

6/30/1768: Admin. accts. of Peter Gough, SMC. Received from: Kenelm Cheseldine, Wm. Hammersley, Wm. Jordan. Payments to: Joseph Martindale, James Jordan, John Gardiner, James Gordon, Thomas Shanks, Jeremiah Jordan, Charles Goldsborough, Walter Dulany, Esq., Samuel Abell, Kenelm McWilliams, Dr. Henry Jernigan, Charles Evans, Nicholas Cissell, execs. of Philip Key, Esq., Thomas West, execs. of James Mills. Exec.: Eleanor Howard, wife of Peter Howard. (Admin. accts. of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, Libers, 52-58, 1764-1768 by V. L. Skinner, Jr.). NOTE: This record is not on CD #206.
