      James Benjamin Vize, farmer of the Waverly Precinct, is the son of William and Brittania (Smallwood) Vize. His father, a tobacconist and farmer, was born in Alexandria, Va., in 1790; married in Baltimore in 1815; came to Union County in 1843, and died here in 1863. His mother was born in Baltimore in 1793, and died in Union County in 1859. His Grandfather, William Vize, a teacher of Baltimore, was born in Pennsylvania, about six weeks after his mother landed in America. His paternal grandmother was an Irish lady, whose name is not remembered; his grandfather, Bazil Smallwood, who was a sea captain, and lived at Alexandria, but was a native of England, married Mary Gough (Mary Gough was the Aunt of Joseph, Isadore, John, Benjamin and Juliann Drury Gough, see Mary's family below), a Maryland lady.
      Our subject was born in Marion County December 15, 1822. His training, "off and on," consisted of two or three years' schooling in Marion County. He came to Union County with his parents, and, in 1856, he married Margie McMurray, the daughter of Thomas and Margie (Waller) McMurray. Mrs. Vize's father, a Union County pioneer, has been dead a long time. Her mother was born in Washington County, but came to Union in early days, and died here in 1871. Both her grandfathers were named Thomas, and were Union County Pioneers. Her maternal grandmother's maiden name was Mary Vaughn. Mrs. Vize was born in Union County in 1838, and died here in 1885. She was Protestant when she married, but through the exertions of her husband, she was induced to embrace the Catholic faith. Seven children were born to Mr. Vize. Thomas Joseph married Susan Abell, and is a grocer in Waverly. The children at home are Benjamin Franklin, John Ernest, Robert Stephen, Paul Edmund, Mary Belle and Annie Crawley.
      During the war Mr. Vize suffered somewhat from foraging parties, but was never deprived of his liberty. He has never removed except when he came direct from Marion to Union; but has traveled in Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Maryland. He has one hundred and fifty acres of land, one hundred of which is cultivated, and all of which he has personally under his charge. His crops are tobacco, corn and wheat. His residence is a log hours, weather boarded, and a frame addition. It was built in 1857, on a beautiful site commanding a view of a large scope. Mr. Vize is a Democrat in politics, and has been a member of the Catholic Church since infancy. He is one of the good, quiet, substantial men of the county.
