      Elizabeth (Betty Burch) Wathen Stumpf, passed away on February 9, 2017 at the age of 97. She was born to John B. Wathen and Mary Luckett Wathen on April 27, 1919, in Morganfield, KY. She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years David J. Stumpf, and brothers James Louis & Bernie Wathen.

      Betty attended St.Ann's grade school and St. Vincent's Academy in Morganfield, KY. She received her Diploma in Nursing from Nazareth School of Nursing at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, KY. Upon graduation, she became a registered nurse and worked in several hospitals during her career. During WWII, she volunteered her time on the "shake-down" cruises to check the medical supplies and infirmaries on LST boats built at Jeff Boat Works in Jeffersonville, IN, as well as provided nursing care to the shipyard crews.

      Betty was a devoted wife and mother to her husband & children, a devout Catholic and actively involved in Christ the King church and school for over 67 years. Her involvement included the Altar Society, Legion of Mary and a lifetime of supporting her children & grandchildren's interests & activities.

      She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband. Summers were spent with family on Barkley Lake and later visiting children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren in their homes. In recent years, she enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren grow via the gift of technology with Skype and FaceTime.

      She is survived by her six (6) children: E. Ann Clem (Dr. Bruce); John D. Stumpf (Margaret [Jo]); Mark Stumpf (Gloria); Mary McCarthy (Jim/Mac); Paul Stumpf (Marysue); and Jane Wildeman (Dick).

      Sixteen (16) grandchildren: Sean (Colleen) and Jeremy (Adrienne) Clem; Katie Stumpf (Dr. Scott) Eller; Jason, David, Daniel (Tanaya) Stumpf & Jennifer Stumpf (Matt) Thomas, Owen McCarthy & Blair McCarthy (Major Paul) Atkinson; Casey (Melissa), Adam (Amy), Kipp (Toni) Stumpf & Lindsay Stumpf (Brandon) Silverstein; Dr. Philip and Matthew Mason and Kathleen Mason (Bryan) Lichtenwalner, and sixteen (16) great-grandchildren: Madeline Margaret, Elizabeth Grace and Mary Katherine Eller; Addison Antonia, McKenzie Raye and Ian Michael Silverstein; Vivienne Elizabeth and Mary Jane Clem; Cormac Monroe and Killian Memphis Stumpf; Sophia Elizabeth Stumpf; Lucy Alexandra Lichtenwalner; Parker John Stumpf; Daphne Harper, Finley Logan and Tessa Avery Stumpf. Betty is also survived by her brother, Thomas Wathen, sister, Edd Marie Wathen Padgett, and devoted nieces and nephews.

      Our family wants to give a special "Thank You" to those that took care of Mother and kept her comfortable at home, especially Ruther Eakins, Theresa Critser, Jasmine Grant and Joanna Stratman for your years of friendship, love and care to our parents & family. A special thanks also to Dr. William Hardesty and Deaconess/VNA Hospice Care.

      Visitation will be at Zeimer's East, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, on Friday, February 17 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A vigil service beginning with the rosary will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will also be held at Christ the King Church on Saturday, February 18 at 9:30 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Alex Zenthoefer officiating.

      Entombment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Evansville.
