Notes - [Girten, Charles, 1819.FTW]
Joseph Crafton "Hap" Girten worked for the railroad for eight years then bought and operated a tavern, "Hap's Tavern" at 11th and Osage in the 1940's and 50's in the Armourdale neighborhood, Kansas City, Kansas. The tavern was about a block from 1118 Argentine Blvd, home of his mother, Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Gough Girten. Leona Girten Hawver, daughter of Elizabeth, Lloyd Hawver, son Bill Hawver and daughter Judy Hawver lived with Elizabeth for several years until the July 13th, 1951 flood.
Hap supported his mother after her husband died in 1935 and helped his sister, Mary, through high school. Mary worked at the tavern for about a year after high school.
Hap died at St Margaret's Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas of TB and lung cancer.
An interesting coicidence is found in that John Beagle, father of Myrtle Beagle Hawver, Lloyd Hawver's mother, in 1895, was in a fatal horse team and street car accident in the Argentine district and was brought to the car barn at llth and Osage, exactly across the street from Hap's Tavern.[george benjamin gough.FTW]
