    • Good Morning,

According to Margaret Fresco's book, "Marriages and Deaths in St. Mary's County, 1634-1900", she states: Joseph Leo Gough, husband of Cassandra Cecil, in War of 1812, died at sea, buried Hampton Roads, VA. Ref. Tercentenary History of Md., p. 221. (Fresco).

I have these books and have been pulling toether biographies for the page, but hadn't gotten that far yet, however, Terecentary History of Maryland, Vol. 4, p. 221. Biographical Sketch of Mary Genevieve (Gough) Hodge:

"Mrs. Hodge's grandfather, Joseph Leo Gough, married Cassandra Cecil, of St. Mary's county. During the War of 1812 he served as paymaster of the 12th Regiment, receiving his commission on June 12 of that year and later became cargo inspector. He died at sea and was buried at Hampton Roads, Virginia."

Her grandfather may have been Joseph Leo Gough, but if he was, he didn't serve in the War of 1812 unless they were accepting youngsters about the age of 9 or 10. But let's just say that sometimes when approached to do a biographical sketch people sometimes got a bit "grandiose."

What do I think? I think that Mrs. Gough's grandfather was probably Joseph Leo Gough and that he was probably the son of Charles Gough and Ann "Nancy" Langley. Surely she would have known her grandfather's name. She just didn't have her facts straight about the war.

Joseph Leo Gough, b. 1803-1804 who m. Cassandra Cissell. The information about him being in the War of 1812 is obviously incorrect. Linda Reno

      Hi Mike,

      The below listed sources:

Bernard B Gough’s page in Tercentenary History of Md.

Decendents of William Gough from Randy Dunavan

Joseph Gough of Leonardtown Gough Family Tree

Thomas W Gough of Towson, Md. Family Tree

Desendents of Hester Larkin 125 page file

      Stephen Gough’s 1796 Will JJ2/143

      George Gough’s 1807 Will JJ3/181

      Charles Gough’s 1809 Will JJ3/203

      Numerous files from Mike Gough

      Numerous information from Janet Reno

Lead me to believe the following:

      1. George is not the son of Stephen. He was not mentioned in his will with the other 8 children.

      2. Georges 1807 will specifically states “my sister Elizabeth shall have a home provided by my son Charles.

      3. Charles 1809 will states “my Aunt Elizabeth Gough shall be free of all encumbrances and debts of my father George Gough.

      4. Stephen had no daughter Elizabeth.

      5. For some reason Charles Gough III is in wrong generation.

Taking everything into consideration, I believe the original decendent list in the Tercententary is wrong. I believe my decendent list is as follows:

      William & Hester Gough 1679

Stephen & Mary Tattershall Gough 1700

      Charles Gough I B) after1676

Charles II & Ann Egerton Gough 1694

      George & Priscilla Gough 1739

Charles III & Ann Langley Gough 1751

      Joseph & Cassandra Gough 1804

      Thomas W. & Mary Maguire Gough 1843

Bernard & Ida Magruder Gough 1881

I am currently seeking Charles Gough II will to see if George is mentioned.

Randy's Decendent list shows Charles & Ann Egerton children as follows:

      Monica 11/12/1743

      Stephen 11/26/1746

      Elizabeth 9/4/1751

      George 11/10/1739

& Charles 5/4/1751...Married to Ann Langley....I believe he has been put in the wrong generation.

      Regards
